Well, I'll preface this by saying I've never had a Foundation. I have and LOVE my early 80's T-40, and I briefly had a Palaedium. I also put on a fresh set of DR Fat Beams that I've never tried before...they were just sitting around so I figured I'd try 'em.

Aside from being possibly the worst packing job I have ever seen, issues include

Crack on the back that goes from the D string tuner to the third fret...really don't know if it can be repaired or not

Pots that are so noisy...gotta be replaced.

Some of you Foundation owners can help out here...the neck pickup is about 5x louder than the bridge pickup...Neck pickup sounds really nice...bridge pickup is really thin and weak. Can I assume this isn't normal?

I was so looking forward to getting this bass, and I still want to figure something out...it's a sunburst/rosewood with an unpainted headstock...really nice looking classic bass.

There are a lot of things wrong with that bass. The bridge pickup should not sound like that. The neck has a severe crack. Return it and get another. There are tons of Foundy's out there. If the seller didn't divulge these problems in his auction, make him pay for return shipping.

Thanks for the fast reply! The seller contacted me...super nice dude, BUT said the bass played and sounded perfect when he shipped, which is impossible...The E string was where the D string shoulda been and vice-versa :rollno:

I'm really extra bummed because the sunburst/rosewood/unpainted headstock is visually right up my alley...I love basses from the 80's, but not super 80's looking basses, if that makes sense :D

The seller is filing an insurance claim and asked if I could hold off and negative reviews for a few days...fine with me as I have no desire to mess up someone's rep if they are at least trying to work with me

There is no way that bass got that kind of damage during shipment. Unless the box is severely damaged, no shipper will pay that claim. If he pays for return shipping, there's no reason to hit him with neg feedback, though.

Sunburst Foundations are not rare. You might not be able to find one for sale this second, but within a month or two, one will come up. Just keep your eyes on ebay and GC.

I'm sure you're correct...the box wasn't damaged...I think the seller just runs a pawn/antique store and doesn't know what to look for...shame...I was really looking forward to this bass. Thanks again!

Well, I suggest you buy another Foundation and this one for spare parts. It's always nice to have an extra bridge, string tree, pups etc laying around.

So I was at GC Concord the other day and they have a Peavey Cirrus BXP 4 for $249.

I have never played a BXP before. Only USA models.

My conclusion is ... SAVE your money and buy a USA Cirrus. I am speechless as to how these are even called a Cirrus. Everything about it was substandard. It felt horrible, had a thick later of polycoat on the neck, thin stringers, knobs put on crooked so they don't turn smoothly, felt cheap, and sounded like it was ten feet under water. I know, I know, you want me to tell you how I really feel ...

A USA Cirrus is a fine work of art and a pro level, boutique bass no matter how you look at it. A BXP Cirrus is for a beginner who wants a bass better than a Squier. I can appreciate that they are for high school students, but for you TB'ers who have never played a USA Cirrus and think a BXP is what they are like, then you have something to look forward to.

So, if you are a bassist looking to trade up to a pro level bass, please skip the BXP's. I know the low price is attractive, but save the extra scratch and get a USA Cirrus.

Hi all- I just "won"(paid the highest bid for) a 1978 T-40 on Feebay, and wanted to check in and see if anyone had a good source for or any spare parts for one of these. It appears I will need a truss rod cover, a replacement for the OEM black pickguard (the one it has is cracked), and one of the pickup toggles is fried. Also, does anyone have any experience putting flatwound strings on one of these? I have a set of new Fender stainless flats sitting around, and figured I might try them on the T-40, unless there's a good reason not to.

TIA for any info and guidance!

I can either post pictures from the Feebay sale, or wait until I get it and take new ones. You guys tell me!

I have a new OEM 2-way toggle (the flat kind) for the Phase Switch. You can have it, if that's the one you need.

Thank you! That's a very nice offer! I have a question posted to the seller right now to find out which of the two switches is broken. It didn't say in the description. If it is indeed the "Phase Switch", I will most likely take you up on that offer! Say, are you a T-40 owner, by any chance? If so, I would love to pick your brain about your experience with this vintage gem.

Had this post in another thread, I picked up USA Millennium Standard P/J for under $200 on CS (Brand new with OHSC) and was holding off my off my "tone" opinion with the new Dimarzio Model P/J's I put in this week and until I had a chance to try it out in my band setting last night?

So I ran it with the P pup full on, J pup about 50% and rolled the tone knob off about 25%... pure deep FUNK tone that cut through Keys, Guitar and a loud Drummer, but without blowing anybody out of the club.

This has to be the biggest steal I ever made! And I'm really digging the P/J tone compared to all my other Jazz basses. Not to mention the great build quality and the silky fast neck which is about as good as any neck I've ever played on.

I owned a 1981 Sunburst/Rosewood T-40 up until last month. It just wasn't getting the playing time it deserves.
(I blame my MM/J Millennium and Axcelerator for that).

The T-40 is an awesome bass and you can dial in an amazing amount of tones. It's unique in the bass world where the Tone knobs can change the pickups from Single-Coil to Humbucker mode just by turning the Tone knobs from 0-7 or 7-10...Actually, I miss it already.

If you need the Owner's Manual I can send you one via email - as well as the T-40 wiring diagram.

The price is just the market value and most Peavey's are gems in that range. The Peavey necks are as good as any for durability but like any other can be abused. I've seen more USA Fender necks with problems over the years than Peavey, especially the ski jump. It kind of boils down to "If it looks good, odds are that it is".
