U.S. Peavey Club

I've had a crap ton of Peavey basses. Here's a couple of pics of the herd at different times. And the B Quad 4s, Mill 4s, and my Fury I've owned aren't even pictured.

After all these, I think I like my Fury the best. I've pretty much learned that I don't like 35" scale like I though I did and am considering selling my Mill 5 and Cirrus 6 (the only other Peaveys I have left) just because I never play them and am not sure I ever will, now.

But that's not the point. The point is, Peavey Furys may be one of the least expensive basses you can buy. At least, one of the least expensive Made In America basses. And they are AWESOME. As much or more of a keeper to me than any other bass Peavey has ever made. As long as you don't need more than 4 strings, of course.

Oh, and that is a 1966 Fender Precision on the bottom right of that last picture. I sold that to the lead singer from Franz Ferdinand and kept the Peavey Fury, if that says anything.

hey everybody, i tried a search, and used the search function for this long thread as well.

i am wondering about the differences in the models of the VFL pups. heres the story-

i have a peavey cirrus BXP, and the bridge pup had developed this weird static-y noise in to. i thought maybe the electronics needed to be cleaned, so i took some contact cleaner to everything. no difference. i then thought maybe the blend pot was going bad, so i replaced that, no difference. after some searching, i found a repair guy who happen to have a set of peavy VFL pups from a foundation. i took my guitar to him, and he replaced the bridge pup in question, and gave me the other just in case. so the pup he replaced it with sounds WAY different than the one that came out of it, and not in a good way. the output is different between the two, and they dont play well together. the pups also acted very microphonic, any touching of the casing with either fingers or a pick would made an audible sound. i play with a pick alot and i would get alot of "clicks" and extra noises that the last pups didnt have.

after awhile fiddling with this new pup (and not liking it at all), i decided to try the other pup he gave me, and it was the same thing. so i just put the original back in with the static.

it got me wondering, what type of electronics are in the foundation that it came out of? the cirrus has a 3 band pre-amp thats 18v. after some more digging and talking to people - the VFL foundations are all VVT passive. my guess is there is a difference between these VFL's, and the newer ones in my cirrus. can anyone confirm?

another question - since i have this other set of pups and i cant seem to find any of the VFL's of the same vintage as the one i need replaced, i was thinking of converting the cirrus to passive and using the foundation VFL's, but im not sure how to wire the pups. they have 3 wires- red,white, and bare. in the cirrus the red goes to the preamp/batteries, the white to the center leg of the blend, and the bare the the left of center leg (if the pot knob part is facing down). can someone tell me how to wire it in a VVT setup, or just take a picture of a VFL foundation control cavity? (or if anyone has a newer set of VFL's and wants a trade, maybe we can arrange something)

Exactly like my 85 Foundation.....Fender 9050 flats sound really good on mine.

I decided I wanted maximum contact so I carefully shimmed the neck pocket....it sustains really good.

The Patriot neck I've had clamped since Boxing Day is a goer.

This weeks' contract has been put back so it was time for important work.

So the T-40 neck came off and The Patriot one went back on. Still a wee bit more relief than I'd like
but night and day to what it was.Might manage a tiny bit more after 24 hours settling time.

Replaced both speed knobs and set action,intonation. 8" radius gauge is missing so it was a guess using
the 7.25"

All in all though I'm happy enough and more importantly another Peavey is up and running :thumbsup:

Bodes well for the T-45. Re-wire to tackle on a T-40 next as both switches are here :nailbiting:

Leaving my Classic Stingray and BFR Bongo at home this weekend. I'm taking two 30+ year old basses on the road with me instead: T-40 and '84 Ibanez Musician. The T-40 is DADG tuned (110-85-65-45 DR Hi-Beams) and the Ibby is CGCF (125-90-70-50 DR Hi-Beams).

The T-40 never fails to amaze me when I rehearse with it, it deserves some gig time!! It's so versatile and tasty sounding! I've found the one sound that I'll probably use 99% of the time though: both pups full on, both tones around 7-ish. I'll be showing it off in Nashville tomorrow and Cedar Point, NC the next day.

I've got a NBOTWD (new bass on the way day) today. I've been looking for a second Axcelerator 5, and after looking since mid November I guess, one finally popped up on eBay, and I snagged it. Should be here by early next week.

So now I'll have a silver and a purple. Color me psyched up! My bolt on USA Cirrus that I'm trying to sell is going to get no love anymore, and that's saying something.... I love Cirruses.

Much compliments on the looks and sounds from my two old basses, at last night's show.... more than I typically get. Hmmmmm. One bass player said the T-40 sounded like a Rickenbacker. I do have the knobs set to give some Rick flavor, but I think the T-40 sounds better. Full scale length and beefier/heavier construction give the T-40 an edge over a Rick. I've owned 3 and they kinda remind me of the SG of basses, too thin-bodied IMO which can contribute to the banana-ing that some old Ricks have.
