Your thoughts on a 1980's USA Peavey Fury P-Bass copy? I have a Fender USA P-Bass that I really love, but to be honest I'm somewhat underwhelmed by its sound/tone. I have to admit that my Peavey Zodiac BXP sounds better and cost a whole lot less. But I really like the look of a P-bass so I'm thinking about getting the Fury. What can I expect tone-wise? How does it compare to a Fender P? Does it have a thin neck like the Zodiac?
By the way, here's a pic of my Peavey Zodiac BXP. Not hardly a mark on it ... anything you see in the pic is either dirt or a reflection.
To me the 2nd model 80s Fury is the best. Telltales are the pointy peghead w/pinstripe and the pickguard is a straight line between the pickup and bridge. The bass was designed by Jim DeCola and the pickup is a 5 wire fully shielded with Alnico pole pieces Jim did and was made in Meridian. Maple and rosewood frettboards have a beautiful feeling rolled edge and are slim but big enough to know you're holding something. 1 1/2" topnut. Haven't played a Zodiac so I can't compare. Sound wise it's better than any stock P I've heard, IMO. Played the sunburst at Friday's gig. The blocks are stickers. Prices have crept up in the last few years but good condition examples are available in the $250-300 range.

Haha, I could tell my Patriot was a country bass... I had to replace the first 5 or 6 frets. There’s was even some finish worn off the maple fretboard. All the other frets were 90%+ . Plays like a million bucks now.
The Forum Plus is a Metallic Green. Not sure what Peavey called the color, but it's the main reason I got that bass. I was looking for a passive P/J, a Foundation S was my main target. This popped up on eBay for cheap and was green so I took a chance on it. Once cleaned up, set up and Wilde P46/J45L with VTB and push/pull series/parallel for the P pickup installed, it's exactly what I wanted.
Hey Brent! This does have a ding on the bass side shoulder behind the 5th fret. It's off center and goes to the wood. I touched it up with a Sharpie. I also lightly sanded the back of the neck. I prefer the matte feeling and there was some uneven finish wear on it, so the sanding made it look more uniform.Hey there! @bigtone23 Would you mind checking to see if there is a ding or chip on the back of the neck around the 7th fret middle of the neck?I'm wondering if thats my old Dyna? A close up of the headstock would be great too! If it is mine there is an odd little scratch on the front of the headstock near the edge. What a story if it is! I bought it new eons ago.

Peavey experts, I have a question about the mid control on my 1985 Dyna with preamp board #98890360 052385. The archived owner's manual online (revised on 3/88) states that the mid control is a peak/notch that operates from 100Hz-2KHz with a frequency center of 300Hz when counter clockwise and 1.5K clockwise.
It really just sounds and acts like a simple +/- about 10dB cut/boost around 400Hz. Did this change with the revision? There are no signs of tampering/modding to the circuit board.

Nope that isn't my old one. The ding I mentioned was pretty much in the center of the back of the neck. It was through to the wood. It used to bug me until I realized I could tell where I was on the fretboard in the dark!
The head stock scratches were light but very distinctive. Two together.I can't thank you enough for taking pictures. What a story that would have made! My Vermont bass making it all the way to Texas! I can't remember when I sold it? Pre kids so maybe 11 or 12 years ago? I know my Peavey Alphabass amp head went around the same time.

I figured it was country but turned out to be old time gospel music. Got to talk to the original, long time owner for a short while. Thumb picker just as I guessed.
The 1st model Dyna Bass five knob preamp has a passive mid control done with an L/C/R circuit (inductor/capacitor/resistor) and it is a peak/notch type. It was probably done passive to save battery life. An active mid cut/boost would have taken 2 more transistors for 1/3 more power from the battery.
I have a late 80's Fury, white w RW board and Chandler tort guard...Duncan SPB1 Vintage P pickup (a really good vintage P type pickup) w Fender 9050 flats broken in, absolutely great bass but the word is getting out there with P style players who want the J neck.
Also have a 1st Gen Fury, clear ash body and slant SF pickup but the rare bigger P style neck that you dont see on Peavey basses much.....i havent spent enough time with this bass as its minty, the neck is a bit big for me and it has rounds that are typical clanky....i need to install my Fender 9050 flats and play around with the action/setup.
THAT said, the 2nd Gen Fury are outstanding if you want the J neck and even though i dont own a 2nd Gen WITH the stock P style pickup, you can fit most any P pickup which makes it great compared to many Peavey basses that use proprietory Peavey pickups (which most are great btw).
Btw Mech, were these Schaller alnico P style pickups in the late 80's Fury?
2nd and 3rd model necks fit the 1st model Fury fine if you want to change it. I have a 2nd model neck on my 1st model body. The peghead looks the same and the script "Fury" is the same.
It's my understanding the 5 wire split P was made in Meridian but it's always a possibility they were eventually farmed out. The 3rd model started with a 3 wire Korean that's really nice. I think the wire colors are blue, red and black. Sometimes in the mid-90s it changed to a Chinese version with black and white wires that is a little more ho-hum to me.

For Dyna comparison here is my '91 second model Dyna Bass 5 with the Flat Top Active Humbuckers. Mine weighs in at 8.6lbs. I've gigged this bass for nearly 30 years and absolutely love it.
