I was opening up the cavity in my new-to-me Axcelerator 5 to place some dense foam under the pickups for height adjustment, and I was interested to discover two things.
First, the pickups are *massive*: big bricks and heavy.
But second, and more interesting, is that there's a giant routing under the pickguard, above the neck pickup. It's very deep and there's acres of space in there, including for the cute little floating platform for the preamp. (Kind of cheesy ribbon wiring from it to the controls.)
The question I'd have is what this big rout was for. Was there a model that used this body shape but with something up there? I don't think it could be for a pickup since the platform where the neck pickup is placed is a bit more shallow to accommodate the mounting screws. Was it just routed out for weight reduction? It's a pleasantly light instrument. I do wonder....
