Sbociol.....I have two TL-5s with the VFLs (see posts 448 and 461 in this thread) and with the onboard preamp the only sound I haven't been able to get to my satisfaction is the P bass thump. They are strung with round wounds and I don't want to use flatwounds due to their limitations.

The Schaller roller bridge was factory. From what I find on the interwebs it was a "Schaller 496 5-String Roller Bass Bridge". I really like them, but if the replacement is good quality and acts like it should, there's no need to change. I have a Wilkinson on one that needed more string margin adjustment when I put T-40 pickups on it (post 439).

I received a copy of the issue with the one page Dyna Bass article. The text really doesn't say much and the bass used for the pic had the E string off the roller saddle. This is a common occurrence when strings are changed on a Schaller roller bridge. The string is to the inside and the margin on the neck is atrocious and I'm sure too low to play. I'm amazed the problem wasn't caught by a magazine of this quality. Had it been a P Bass.......

I'm back to being a proud Peavey Cirrus owner!
I played Cirrus basses exclusively for about five year straight and loved every minute of it. Then, having come into a decent chunk of money, I decided to go down the custom road. I had a couple of custom Roscoe basses (which were fantastic) and, as many of you know, had a couple tremendous Skjold basses.
Well...as fate would have it, I was wandering through a local music store a few months ago and they had a nice selection of Cirrus basses hanging on the wall and in the store room as well. I grabbed one, sat down and plugged into a nice Genz Benz rig. Wow! I had forgotten how amazing the Cirrus basses were. The feel, the tone and the fantastic quality of the Cirrus just blew me away...again!
I found a couple beautiful basses and made the decision to become a Cirrus player once more. I sold my customs, bought the Cirrus basses and couldn't be happier. The Cirrus basses about 95% of what my customs were at 1/3 the price. Sure, there are things about my customs that were absolutely awesome, no doubt. They were all that and then some. But for me, the Cirrus basses are like coming home. I guess they're just my thing!

Now, you're probably asking yourself..."why no strings on the blue one?" That got shipped to Carl at Chicago Bass Doctor today to be converted to fretless with an epoxy finish on the fingerboard! And yes, I did have all black hardware installed on that one for a little more "stealth" look. I'll be sure and post pics in a few weeks when it comes back with its nice clean maple inlays and shiny epoxy coating!

How is 429$ for a near mint T40 in white? With or without case? One is in a store near me, it seemed to play well, but I didn't plug it in.

$429's like on the more expensive side of 'normal'. I might offer $400 and see what they say, i know that the usual 'used' places in the area have good haggle room.
In our area i usually see them in the $300-$350 range... but i've seen them being sold (and purchased) for up to $500.
If it plays well it'll be worth it. Definitely plug it in and play it!
*if it's an '83 white w/black pick guard, TRY it out. It's a rareish color and i've noticed 'A' white w/black pick guard '83 T-40 that has been floating around the area (both on CL and in Atomic)... so if it fits that description DEFINITELY try it plugged in to make sure it's not a dud that floats from owner to owner.
I'll get to join this club too in a few days! I just sent out payment for a T-20!!
The original coffin case factors into the value on these old Peaveys, especially the felt-lined version. For that price I'd want the case if possible. YMMV.
around here, a T40 with case is starting to creep into the $300-350 range also.

I agree that $429 is on the high side. If there's a rosewood fretboard, that will increase the value. IIRC, that was an optional upgrade back then.
I have a 1990 Foundation in Sunfire Red Metallic. A previous owner switched out the stock bridge for a Badass. Sustain for days and a great neck.

I just picked up this TL-Five from eBay. Other than the gold plating wearing off the tuners, it's MINT! What a bass!! Peavey really outdid themselves with these. It's the butteriest playing 5er I've ever owned.

The body wood has a nice flame to it but I couldn't capture it in the photos. There are some spots around the body where the clear finish has aged and yellowed but it's super clean and in really nice shape. It also slaps very well considering the narrow string spacing. At first I didn't care for the active electronics but I finally figured how how to get a more passive sound.
FL - try lighting it from 2 sources to bring out the flame. one high to the right (like the sun?) and a secondary low on the left. the contrast will make the grain pop. just sayin'.
note on my foundation:
took the DR blacks off. too rattle-y and buzz-y. picked up some roto 77's for it.
they are a bit stiffer than i like, but they sound KILLER. thru guitar rig with a little autofilter and chorus ... wow.
let it sit overnight to acclimate to new strings, sat down with it plugged in and used the tuner to see how high i could leave the strings and keep the intonation right ... wow. didn't have to touch the truss rod. for light gauge rounds, i had the saddles cranked almost all the way up. now, they are so low i had to lower the pickups ... i am seriously thinking about having Justin work on my fingerboard now. flats tend to pick up on imperfections a lot more than rounds.
im thinking black fret lines, on lightly sealed rosewood. i really hate white fret lines on rosewood. dunno why.
if i knew what color i was going to eventually paint the body, i would do the lines to match. maybe i will go stealth on it. new black tuners (cause the originals felt like they were gonna bust with the flats on it), black bridge (i really like the one on my ibanez ... hrmm) black squishy knobs.
maybe i should have gone for tapes ... oh well. i can't afford to spend any more $$ of gear right now anyway. i'll have to start tucking some away this summer.

Does a pair of vintage T-40s (one '81 natural with maple fretboard, one '82-3 sunburst with rosewood fretboard) get me a US Peavey Club number?

White do not command a high price tag.. Sienna Bursts do.. I've seen them sell in the $650-800 range recently (in pristine shape)
They shippped them in a Contour case.. if fur lined they command a higher tag... Add $50-75 in value for this case...
PM me if it's just foam lined.. DO NOT remove residue from your bass.. there is a simple way to remove this gummy mess (and not destroy your finish)
