Updated 2x10 Shootout!

O' Talkbass.com, why must thou taunt and tempt me so!?

So *now* I really want to get an EA 210NL. Yesterday I really wanted a Bergantino HT210. Last week, I was content to get an Eden210XLT and can regularly find one for a pretty good used price -- not something I can say about the Bergy or the EA.

The reason why I've decided on the EA is that it's less than 50 pounds. But I have found a shop that has an HT210 in stock -- the whole thing will cost slightly less than 600 with shipping. It's awfully tempting. I just don't know if I'll ever luck out and find a used NL-210 for anywhere near that price.

I've got a DB750 at least for a few more hours....I will be shipping it tonight.

This is a really fine amplifier but I found it a little to slow on the bottom end stuff. Running it through my El Whappo or Tri210L was a real treat for my ears, but in the mix it suffered about 70% of the times I used it. Since the Accu cabs have a huge bottom end, I found myself turning down the bass most of the time. I need a tighter faster sound on stage especially in the lows. I dunno... maybe I screwed up... Maybe Joker's idea of a para eq in the loop would be the answer or a High Pass Filter. Still, compared to my Demeter201s, WWU, and the TFB550 I had recently, the DB750 had the most beautiful full sound but could not compete in the low tight fast arena with the others mentioned. I have a feeling DB750 would be better suited for a sealed cab like the Berg NV or a Coffin. 2cents.

hmm... that's a shame, Biggs...

but did you buy it from a shop and have to return it under an evaluation period? or would you like to sell it used?

i'm actually in the market for one, especially after hearing my Acme with it. i'm about to put my DB728 up in the emporium. let me know.

EDIT: just did ;)

I did by it from our good friend Joel at the Groove Shoppe. I think I expired my trial period having it since August. I never even asked. Sold it used already. I don't like taking a hit but that the price one pays to really try something live more than once or twice. I gave it a good shot. I'm just not a collector and there is lots of gear to try before I die. :help:

Rudy's Music in NYC has a new old stock HT210. I played through it today (briefly). I don't know the price since I didn't ask. I didn't even expect to see it there considering they don't have it listed on their website. But then again, there was a couple of things there that aren't listed on their website, like 2 Bag End S15-Ds, which I've never seen listed on their site for some reason. (I don't understand why they're a Bag End dealer and have BE cabs in stock, but don't advertise it.) Give them a call at (212) 391-1699.

I believe that the list price on the HT210 was about $749 (which I believe is also the price for the HT210S). To be honest, I do think that this is a heck of a cab for the money.

What's with all this Accu-lang-tino crap? Where's the Peavey?

FWIW, I gigged with a Peavey 210TX for years. I quit using it when one speaker developed a slight rattle. Years later, I loaded it with two Madison 10" drivers (I forget which model right now, but they were their better drivers), and it sounded phenomenal - very punchy.

Hey tom, were you putting the full 2000 watts int the 4 ohm cabs? I'm trying to figure out the optiman amount of power for the B2 i'm getting in the next couple months :ninja:

No, I was not running in bridged mono. So, just to be clear, when I was saying "full power of the CA9", I meant one channel of the CA9. BTW, one channel of a CA9 is pretty much the ideal amount for one 4 ohm Low B2, IMHO.

That's the same output as a PLX 3002 isn't it? 900W or thereabouts. If so, I agree. 900W is an excellent amount into a Low-B2. With 50Hz filters engaged on a 4-string and minimal bass boost, the Acme will handle the lot. For those cranking the bottom or going lower, be wise...

One side of a PLX 3002 into a 2 ohm load is rated at 1,500w, and 900w into a 4 ohm load. But, I find that the CA9's 900 rated watts sound louder and more authoritative (and yes, I am aware of the input gain issues).

Excellent point about the 50 Hz high pass filters. I find that filtering out below 50 Hz has virtually no effect on your tone (much to my surprise, especially on the B string), but helps to reduce unwanted vibration AND helps to tighten up everything else.

+1 on that, and also on cabs like the Eden410XLT or Schroeder's that tend to roll off a little higher... depending on the sound you are going for, either rolling of some of that deep B string fundamental or using a cab that does it for you can actually result in a tighter, punchier, louder B string sound in a live setting.

I was half serious because I have heard many good things about the Peavey 210 TVX (has good lower end extension, good output, etc.)

The only time I tried one was briefly in a music store a couple of years ago and I thought the tweeter sounded a bit "crispy" but that is certainly something you can adjust. I've been thinking of getting one to match up with my 115 BVX BW.

I have a Nitrobass head as a backup but it does do 2 ohms and I think that combo would kick.

The tweeter was, indeed, gawd aweful (IMHO), but on the whole, it's a competent cab that would probably sound pretty good with your 1x15. My main beef with the Peavey cabs, though, was that I could get them sounding pretty darn nice by themselves, but as soon as the band started playing, they were totally lost in the mix.

For some reason, I was sure the PLX3002 was 1,050w @ 4ohms. I just checked the QSC website and they say 900w @4ohms, 1,500w into 2.

I've been using PLX amps since '98 and I agree that the equivalent Crest power packs a little more punch. "Authoritative" is the actually the word I have been looking for to describe this. However, at 3AM, by body appreciates the 21lbs of my PLXs :)

I haven't gigged with one, but I evaluated one at rehearsal and felt the same way. I had a pair of Eden 210XLT's at the time, which probably spoiled me, but I wanted to have a lighter 210 for less demanding gigs anyway. My problem was I couldn't get decent sounding highs out of the cab, but that's purely subjective, as I like a bright tone, and not all players do. If the horn wasn't that important and you just wanted the bite and definition of the 10's mostly, it's a great value, but I'd still prefer the Avatar over it for the same money.
