Usable Triple-Double J Build?

OP I suggest this method of connection to allow access to all possible combinations in the simplest available manner:

The simplest and most intuitive would be six on/off mini-switches, laid out in a single line.

That doesn’t allow for any series modes though.

I did something similar with the four coils of a pair of MM pickups years ago. It was fun.

I am really tempted to make the PG a modular 3 piece:
Section one covers the PuP swimming pool route
Section three holds the Volume/Tone/Jack
Section Two goes between these and could be the 2 5way + Balance, multiple 3way On-on-on, or some other variation.

I would have to clearly label the wires for make connections easy, but that way I could test different configs before settling on one.

I'd even thought about having 3 4way switches, one for each pair, giving them Series, Para, coil1, coil2... I just wasn't sure how to handle the signals from there... 3 volumes->Master Tone -> Master Volume?

I like the idea of being able to blend in the neck/bridge sides since the pups are all the same, the real question is how boomy or sharp, do I want the output. of the selected coils.

My thoughts... maybe put a hum-cancelling pair in the Jazz positions, another hum-cancelling pair in the rickenbacker positions, and the last hum-cancelling pair roughly where the precision pickup goes (have to sort of jam them in there, but could use a '51 P location instead). Then you could wire it to be able to select those positions and it would potentially have great applicable function and flexibility in addition to being a six pickup freakshow. :smug::D:woot:

You can't really see in the pic I posted but I did place the covers in humcancelling pairs so they alternate in neck/bridge width (a few MM different).

I *did* make this a Triple-double J build thread so I suppose I should take the ears off one side of each cover and make my double J housings...

Edit: started writing this last night when I was tired, now that I've reread your post, I understand what you are saying lol

I hate to be 'that guy' but I've done things like this. Not as complex but that's only because of what I discovered along the way. What I discovered is that having two pickups close together means that the magnets from paired pups influence both. 'Off' pickups are therefore never truly 'off,' and not in a good way.. It's a neat project but I think you'll find that you only will get two or three combinations of settings that actually work well, because of magnet influence but especially because of electrical loading, which will result in mud city with more that two or three coils active. UNLESS of course you actively buffer everything, which will be complicated and result in yet another rabbit hole. Not meant to dissuade you - just 'saying.' There's a reason you don't see this sort of thing on the market. But a neat project anyway.

Appreciate your input, and by expressing it the way you did, you certainly are NOT "that guy". You may be right about all of this. However, part of my thought process in the past few months was to look at how to make this project be a testbed so it may be that I start with 6 pups and find, like you said, that it is too muddy (though I'll never have more than 4 coils active), but once I've routed out the swimming pool and if I do the PG in partitions, I should be able to swap things around and dial it back to fewer, strategically placed pups or add circuitry as I experiment.

This is a build that has no specific end result/expectation in mind and I'm sure I wasn't the first to think of it, I just like tinkering and finding stuff out...

Yup, totally get it. I used to have a Guild bass which had three large single-coils, much like P90’s. Way cool. This had a Master volume and tone knobs. Just the two. To make it work Guild applied a three position toggle switch to each pickup. The positions were: On, Off, On+Reverse Polarity (phase). This gave some truly funky tones especially with 'glorpy' filter pedals but again, there were only two or three 'useable' settings (pickups paired or solo'd). Have fun!
