Okay, I've come up with a new scheme, I think it will give me a ton of options. Hypothetically it would give me any combination of pickups with only 5 "controls" that are fairly straightforward... Gotta think about this...

I am mulling sticking to the original plan or going with 2 blend pots... each pair gets a 3-way switch for coil splitting and series (or parrallel) then neck a middle signals run to blend 1 and the that signal runs to blend 2 with the bridge signal.

I would have the ability to isolate any single pickup, be able to choose any pickup combination. The major drawback (common thread with any of these) is I would have to choose series or parallel for each bank since only a 3 way...

With blends, I would be able to balance them better than with switches too.

Are you using three humbuckers? Six coils? Then three blends (one for each pickup to blend the coils) and three volumes. Do your EQ off bass and you end up with a somewhat manageable six onboard knobs. Three if the can stack them but not sure if that pot configuration is available (maybe custom pots).

Short answer is 3 matching pairs of Jpups arrayed as 3 humbucking sets. The current idea is to have each set run through 3way dpdt switch for coil selection. The neck and middle signals from these dpdts will run to one blend and the resulting signal will join with the bridge signal on a second blend. From there to a Volume and a 6-position Varitone.

I'll try to diagram this up so it makes sense. The compound blend should be reasonably intuitive.

Finally getting to work on this some...

Time make the Double J covers!

So, I sawed off one set of ears on each cover last time, now I need to get them flat:
Blade takes care of the obvious excess:

After its fairly smooth taking a sanding block (60 grit) to finish smoothing and to leave the surface scuffed:

So now they marry up nicely:

Of course, the neck pup is a couple of mm narrower, but barely noticeable.

Using a quick set epoxy and fusing them together. You don't need much or it will ooze everywhere.

Epoxy has set, takes 24 hours to fully cure:

I am considering adding "caps" with colored epoxy to either blend in to, or contrast with the custom pg I'll have to make, that will be down the road...

Even if they are thin it should help ensure these cases never come apart.

Clearly you need some more pickups then!

Really, by the time you reach the blend pots its the same thing.

I think the one thing I'll have to keep in mind is that while I may be able to activate every single pickup at once and hear them. It most likely will sound like mud. So the idea is to be able to cherry-pick any combination, but not use more than 3-4 at once.

Okay, I've been putting it off... Tear-down of the Glarry Jazz bass will begin tonight... I might get to routing the swimming pool by Sunday... maybe...

I'm really regretting committing to this because I'm really liking this bass as-is... I'm also stoked to see if I really can make this usable...

Rough approximation:

So this would move the original bridge pup a few mm back and the original neck pup up a few mm so they are further apart, but not by much.

I am hoping to retain a "standard J" config in my possible options so looks like that's feasible and still have them space out...

Okay, was out all day, but that gave me thinkin time...

What if I route a swimming pool and it weakens the body substantially?

So I got to thinkin about just making routes for the neck and bridge identical to the existing "middle" route (where the neck J was)?

I will need to cut just a smidge more for the pickup ears on each set or shave the covers down... probably the former.

At least I am preserving as much of the wood as I can this way...

Forgot I have a ton of 3/4" mdf from my last project so I can make a template tomorrow

Ha Ha, I'm not *TRYING* for excess... I certainly want more than bucket-of-mud-tone...

But the good news with this approach is that I cann always remove the remaining wood if I want to go that route... (route? get it??? )

What kind of pickguard are you looking at putting in?
