Nor should it be all the time for any bassist.
Marcus is super. To me, being a well rounded bassist involves seeing what everyone is doing in many genera. I still feel very weak in many areas. I tried to learn at least one or two songs in each genera. As a result, I like and appreciate more players, their styles and music types.
Be a slave to the music, not the ego.
That's a big step, one that some will never make. I think Vic made it a long time ago.

I think victor wooten is a master bass player. So his technique isn't clean, but no one can do it like he can so lets let him work the kinks out of his own techniques. to be honest hearing victor playing basically fingerstyle he is still a mind boggling bass player. Having met victor he was a truly great guy and having read his book i think his understanding of music goes much deeper than you think. (for fingerstyle check out his solo with dave matthews band on '#41" off of the live in chicago album...)

I was wondering the same thing, he's only asked that question 3 or 4 times already
I may have to do a search and see if I can find some sound bites and video's of his work.
Just this last Saturday, I've watched Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in concert in Dallas. Now I've seen clips of Victor Wooten on YouTube and all and was amazed even by just those videos.
But sitting in the very front row, my adolescent mind was blown. All 4 band members was absolutely incredible. And for Mr. Wooten. When his solo came on, I was rendered speechless. Every note he plays is so musical and full of energy. He also did some amusing yet amazing stuff with his loop effects thing.
That concert has seriously changed me and if Bela Fleck ever comes into or near your town, I seriously recommend you go. It's one thing to listen to audio recordings or YouTube clips but seeing them live is just. Inspiring.

I prefer his band/Flecktones work. That's what he's really about, although his solo stuff is pretty damn amazing.

Oh My God. I simply can't believe what I'm reading from you guys who are hyper critical of Vic. He's an absolutely STELLAR Muscian, by any/all standards, in Every respect: Timing, melody, technique, creativity, endless vocabulary, feel, accompanyment, soloist, etc. etc.! Even if you hate his sound or style or music, or you don't care for slap style, you just can't deny these attributes, period. I've watched him countless times since we met in 1989 and yeah, he'll sometimes go for stuff when playing live that he doesn't always nail perfectly. But he's going for things that are a 15 on a scale of 1-10 of difficulty. He could play it safe if he so chose.....But That's Vic: Push the envelope. 'Undeniably one of the most innovative bassists ever. Period.
I fist met Vic when he came to see me play at a NAMM Show in Chicago, 1989. I'd just started hearing about him that morning. He watched me play, complimented me big time when I got off stage. 'Turned out that he had some of my instructional audio tapes (Superchops 4 Bass), which was where he said he got the term "Double Thumping". Then he took "my" stage and I knew that I was watching a legend in the making. The rest is history. We've been friends since then and I see him about once per year, at which point, he continues to create new stuff (yes, musical). 'Never stops growing, creating.
Like Jaco, Stanley, and a handful of others, he changed the way bass is played and showed new possibilities of what could be done with it.
To boot, he's an amazingly nice, generous, and humble human being.

Yes, these guys are Great, no doubt. But you can't disqualify Vic from this "club". He's a World Class musician who happens to play bass and is one of the most creative/innovative/influential bassists ever....
Sadly, there'll always be a stack on keyboard warriors waiting to pounce on Vic...shame they don't pick up "A Show Of Hands" and listen to more than Classical Thump!
