Vinyl spinners club

I've scored a bunch of great crap off ebay. I love new releases, scour local thrift stores, and local used record shops. My vinyl collection has probably doubled in the last year.
Fellow Club Members! I have a question that I need your help with! It has to do with both vinyl AND love. A tricky prospect!
Now I love music. I love listening to it and I love playing it. I also love my girlfriend(of 5+ years) very very much. However our musical interests are pretty different. We do enjoy some of the same bands: Beastie Boys,TV on the Radio,Nine inch Nails(a little), 80`s stuff like Depeche Mode. But for the most part she doesn`t TRULY enjoy the majority of the stuff I like. I don`t blame her. With out going into the long list of bands I like lets just say that my tastes range from Pink Floyd to The Locust. And everything in between.
Anyway two of the bands that I`m really into are At the Drive In and The Mars Volta. Well,when my girlfriend heard me play some Mars Volta(on CD) she really perked up and took notice. Now when ever we have a nice relaxed weekend night to ourselves she`ll ask me to put on some Mars Volta(which is amazing because she`s more of a radio/mtv/pop music kind of person). So I thought "Here`s a great way to get my Lady into cool music, playing records and spending time together all rolled into one! I`ll buy her the cd she likes on vinyl!"
One problem. Mars Volta records are pricey. But I`m willing to spend the cash as a surprise gift for her birthday. And seeing as how I already bought and gave her gifts to her last week,this would be a cool surprise! Or would it?
That`s what I`d like to hear from you guys. Is it a cool gift plus a neat way to spend time together and bring her into the world of awesome vinyl?
Or does it remind you of the episode of the Simpson's where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball as a birthday gift,thinking that she`ll never use it and he`ll have it for himself?

It might work. It might not.
My wife is happy listening to music through a crappy clock radio, and is completely oblivious to the subtleties of stereo imaging, instrument definition, or the low-end richness of a decent analog system. She enjoys it when I spin some her favorite records from the '70s (which I hunted down becuase I knew she would enjoy them), but she would be just as happy hearing them on a kids' Mickey Mouse mono record player as she is when I play them on my late '80s Technics deck through Klipsch speakers which have been carefully positioned for optimum imaging.
You never know unless you try, though. It might turn out to be a hobby you can both share.

Yeah,those are my thoughts too. I just want to make my honey happy and I think she would get a kick out of playing it on the turntable. I`m going to go ahead and buy it. I can`t really find or think of any other records that she would be more excited about.
She like Kings of Leon too but she also knows how hard it is to find a good copy of Deloused in the Comatorium. I think that would make it a bit more special for her knowing I slugged my way through the internet to find her a record she liked.
At least I hope so!
(Let us not look back to the Christmas of `06 and the forgotten bass she won`t touch.)
I bought her the record yesterday! Should get here 1 to 2 days before her birthday. Fingers crossed!!!

My girl was very happy with the surprise Mars Volta record. She`s been playing the hell out of it and has even gotten the hang of the ins and outs to using a turntable. I`d call this a success!
Question,do you guys keep your 12 inches and 7 inches(or 45`s) separate,like on 2 different shelves or what have you? Or do you use a special case for the smaller vinyl?
I`ve been buying a lot of (for you old timers) 45`s or (for us youngsters) 7 inch/splits and am just trying to figure out where to place everything.

Glad to hear your girl is digging it. Keep feeding her things she enjoys and she'll become very tolerant of your own purchases.
All my vinyl is 12", so I have no input for ya. Sorry.
I have multiple places for all of my vinyls. Each one has it's own compartment.
Am I allowed to be a Vinyl spinner without being an audiophile? 
I just enjoy physically playing my music on occasion. That and I buy the music to support the artist, so would rather spend the extra few dollars and get a Vinyl LP rather than a CD. This does mean I play them on a cheap turntable from the supermarket, and pretty average speakers. Although i'm looking at rectifying that situation when I get some $$$.

I'm looking to get a new pair of speakers, but I want a pair I can connect my laptop to as well.
My only problem is right now my record player is packed away in the basement. I don't remember how to connect it. I just know the old speakers were hooked up via red/black wires into the input/output. I want to use my Kenwood monitors, but they're too big for my room.
I looked at M-Audio AV40 speakers, but someone told me it wouldn't work. I'm completely stumped here.
EDIT: To be honest, I forget what model record player I have. It just says "Authentic" on the front and the hood. I plug it into an old Yamaha preamp. Again, I don't know the model number.

Yeah. we have that one and the 4x2 one for our vinyl. Working pretty well... been using both for about 18 months. I was worried the shelves would bow under the weight, but not yet. We have the door inserts for them too, giving them a nicer (IMO) look.
