Wal Bass Club.

Thanks Mike, that’s the ‘85 MK1 formerly known as a wenge facing, sent back to Wal HQ and had Paul put a new body (2015) on it and went over the whole bass, serviced electronics, leveled and refinished the neck, came back like a new bass, then I sent it to HG Thor to epoxy the fingerboard.

What was the turn-around time on this job? I've heard that HG Thor's finish time is currently around that of Wal's.

So guys who recently took delivery of their new bass.... about how long before it was ready did the communications with Paul and company pick up where they let you know your bass was actively being worked on? just curious ... does most of the building happen in the last month or so?

Did he send you any pics yet of a completed neck? Thats the start of the home stretch. First you'll get a final shaped neck pic with no finish. This might be the 7 to 9 month point.
Then he'll send you a pic with both the neck and body before any finish applied (or if its a full satin, it might be a pic after being finished in satin). You're then about 2 to 5 months til its done.

about 6 months ago he told me they started on the neck... about 2 months ago we picked out the top wood (Zircote) and agreed on gloss finish... that's were we last left off... I'm wondering if COVID has caused delays.. but we have until May 2022 for delivery promise, so not panicking yet!

Of course covid has caused delays!
He had been working alone during covid, which is why new orders were starting to get quoted at 4+ years. And ultimately he stopped taking new orders until this back log can dwindle down to a better time.

I had to go back an re-read what you were asking at first. No he doesn't walk you through the build. Unless you change any options midway, you won't hear from him until the neck and body look like almost the finished bass.

good to know... insane that's he's basically a one man show... makes getting this thing in my hands even that much more special.. Thanks for the insights.

Just heard from his nephew on FB that former Rick Wakeman & Marty Wilde bass player, Roger Newell, passed away on Friday. Most bass players in the UK are more likely to know him from his time as bass editor and reviewer at Guitarist and Bassist magazine. And, of course, he was the person for which this infamous monster bass was first designed and built…

Hey guys. I have a question I am a little embarrassed to ask having been a Wal owner for over 15 years but...

Are the MK series knobs proprietary to Wal or are they available through electronics dealers? I have a custom project in the works that will feature the Rautia multi-coils and the Lusithand preamp. I thought adding the knobs would be a nice nod as the bass will not look like a Wal.

Thanks!
