Good choices. Passive basses are a simpler build with minimal woodwork. As stated above, watch the depth of your pilot holes. Also, if you intend to have a pickguard, order the 20 fret neck. They don't cut truss rod notches for their pickguards, you'll have to notch them yourself and it's much easier to adjust the rod without that overhang from the 21 fret board. Otherwise you'll have to remove the pickguard when you need to make a relief adjustment.

Can I see your Warmoth 5 String bass's headstocks, please?

Hi all!

Any photos you have of your 4 over 1, Warmoth 5 string headstocks will be gladly received -along with any advice if you care to share!

I am undecided as to the best way to fit string trees to a 4 over 1, 5 string, Warmoth headstock. I don't know if a pair of 3 & 2 string, Hipshot retainers will fit in front of the B string's tuner post or even if a string tree is necessary on the B and G strings.

I don't really want to use a full bar type like Sadowsky use (the Floyd-rose locking tremelo type) and neither do I want to use a partial bar over just the highest 4 strings either.

I was thinking that maybe a Hipshot 3 string retainer on only the middle E, A & D strings or maybe a Sandberg diagonal / tilted 3 way type if there isn't sufficient space between the B and G strings' tuner posts......

I've taken the plunge...I ordered parts for my 1st Warmoth build. I've always wanted to build a bass and I've never owned a jazz bass before. I purchased from the "in stock" selection. They had exactly what I wanted in a neck and body. It's going to be a traditional "fender inspired" jazz bass with modern features and quality parts. I still need to buy tuners, bridge and electronics.... I'll have have questions....

I think you'll be fine . So it's a 201 5 hole , That also works with the BA and The Kickass and the KTS

So after a few months of ownership I just can't hang with the neck dive on my Deluxe 5. I ordered a new neck with the graphite rods and I'm gonna have TB'er @Doug Parent do the install/neck reshape for me. I loved the perloid blocks on the current neck (it's a showcase) but couldn't justify shelling out an extra $90 on the new one. I went with maple/Pau ferro, 1-7/8" nut, no finish (Doug will handle that), and as a little tribute to my mother I added the Turquoise stone dots. She has a killer turquoise collection, I can't wait for her to see this. The dots should look awesome with the sonic blue body.

I searched and saw many mixed reviews regarding the graphite rods. Most were from a few years back- does anyone have any CURRENT opinions of Warmoth Deluxe 5 necks (the 4+1 headstock style) with the graphite rods? If you have had both steel and graphite- can you offer up any opinions regarding both? I really dig the tone I have now, especially since I added the Nordy 2b-4c, but the neck dive I'm currently dealing with is just too much for my shoulder. And yes, I have Ultralites installed already. Say good-bye to the bling! (pic is prior to installing the preamp)

All looks good.

I've installed the bridge, and most of the electronics. No issues with that.

I'm still waiting on tuners, strings and the battery box.

I need to hurry up and eat those bananas.

I built the PJ5 not too long ago and just finished the J5 - both are roasted maple with graphite rods. No neck dive, each around 9.5 pounds.

Here is a side by side shot of each though it's at a weird angle.

A couple of random notes - on the inline five headstock, I angled the tuners back towards the body about 15 degrees since the last tuner is close to the end of the headstock - makes it look a bit more balanced so that the key isn't quite as close to the end. On the 4+1, I used Hipshot 1/2 Ultralights which are a tight fit but work in those holes (they are the only size offered) - I didn't want to use the Schallers they spec. Lastly, I used the Hipshot A bridge which allows a bridge spacing of ~18.25mm which is right for these necks (I have 1.875" at the nut) - Warmoth is too conservative IMO with the 17.5mm bridge spacing. If you are going to mount the bridge yourself, I'd pick up an 18mm version.

I took the plunge and ordered a Deluxe 5 Jazz neck and body and will definitely get the 18mm B style Hipshot bridge.

What pickups did you use? I see that Seymour Duncan now do a humbucking Jazz set called 'Apollos' in two different spacing options. I was thinking their 67mm and 70mm set will be dead on for the outer strings' spacing of 18mm at the bridge.

Thanks for the info/idea. I might try 18mm on my Warmoth G5. Do you know if the different string spacings for the A-style bridges have different spacings for the mounting holes as well?

I went with 18mm spacing on mine, I had them only drill for the ground wire as they do not drill for Hipshot A style 18mm. You may need to do that yourself or have someone do it for you. There is more than enough room on both sides of the B and G strings with 18mm spacing. You can probably go as wide as 18.5mm and still have no issues.

I ended up ordering the wrong neck in my first go-around before I consulted with someone here as well. @Doug Parent has built a few Deluxe 5's (and mine, he does great work) you may want to hit him up, he's got some good advice for Warmoth projects.
