I'm getting a Warrior in today from a guy who wants to trade and I'm curious how long ago the bad press was and what it was for.

thanks

There were some quality control issues around the turn of the century (that sounds a little formal, doesn't it?), but they seemed to be somewhat isolated, and, by all accounts are no longer an issue. Terrific basses!!!

I think it mostly refers to some of the late 90s basses. Warrior is just over 10 years old and for a few years the basses could be hit and miss. I've played a few Warriors that were really rough (i.e. heavy, dull sounding, etc.) I've played Warriors as early as #0002. (the second one ever built) A friend in Knoxville that I used to go to church with owns it. It is very nice, but very different feeling than my 99 model. The vast majority of Warriors that I have played were top notch. My Studio Plus 5 is a 99 model and it smokes. I've also owned a 2002 Armed Soldier model which was great. I think the bad press came from guys whose only experience with Warriors was with one of those bad instruments. The newer ones are much more consistent. I would suggest trying it out to see if you like it first.

I will. Ironically, it's the one radub has in his pictures. He traded it to a friend who I may trade it from for a Lakland JO. It's supposed to arrive today and I am anxiously awaiting it.

i am familiar with the brand, but not the basses. I have had other boutique basses, but the Laklands are real players, so I'm doing all of my due diligence in advance. I will certainly let the bass make its case and, I'll let you guys know what I found also. I'm really looking forward to it, because I think they're both great basses and it's a no loser either way for all parties in the process (radub gets some high end Eden gear so he's definitely a winner.)

Thanks for such fast and candid responses. I really appreciate them.

Joe's going away. The only identifying mark on this is NAMM 079 USA written across the bottom fret closest to the body. Well played, no stringing of the B and E through the body (oops, I was wrong. It does have this feature. They come in through the back of the body and the holes do have ferrules). Very light weight, pretty plain Jane as far as woods go.

Anyone have a hint as to what this is? I suspect it's relatively old since it doesn't have the newer features. Pictures to follow if anyone cares. Can I have a number?

That is a Soldier model. Warriors website is not as good as it used to be. I can't find anything on it anymore. The older models were Soldier/Armed Soldier/Studio/Studio Plus/ Dran Michael. The Soldiers were bolt on with the rounded "traditional looking" body shape. The Studios have the pointed body sides. The newer ones are a bit confusing because they went away from these model discriptions and I think they now have the Signature/ Classic / Isabella (single cut) and a few others. Yours is a Soldier model and looks very nice. I would guess the body is mahogany. Many of those are. I had a 2002 Soldier and it was mahogany.

Not sure what you mean by "custom" since none of the basses are mass produced, they are essentially all custom. All of the features seem pretty standard for that model.

It looks like a great bass. That PUP configuration is great!

so this is a "soldier" model?

so the body is mahogany and what about the neck and fretboard? the guy lives 2 1/2 hours away and i have never played a Warrior so i have no idea what to expect. I have several Warwicks and I am selling 2 of them and he asked me to do a trade.

how much wthis bass would be valued at?
what kind of sound am i to expect from it. how does this bass compare to Warwicks?

Sorry but I would like to be a member of the club but I need this info before getting the bass and being able to join you guys here.

what do the knobs do (like a walkthrough please)? I checked that website and has no precise information.

he told me that this was made in 2004 though. is this a good bass or..?

Your bass isn't that old because those tuners were not used on the older ones.

If you want to know more details about it I would call Warrior and talk to JD. I live a few miles from the factory and they are great to talk to. They told me the whole history on my 99 Studio Plus 5 when I took it in in 2002 when I bought it used. It was originally built for and owned by Andrew Gouche. I would have never known if they hadn't told me. Their number is on the homepage at their site. www.warriorinstruments.com

What is "Purple Heart tone strip down neck"? does this mean that the neck and fretboard are purpleheart?

What does "E string through body option" mean?

and this "Locking input jack"?

The purple heart tone strip means it is a 3 piece neck and the center section is purple heart wood. This is standard on all warriors.

The E string ( and B on five strings) is strung through the end of the body close to the strap button. They say this helps the perceived tension on those strings. They can also be strung through the bridge just like the other strings.

The jack is a Neutrik locking jack. In order to unplug the 1/4" cable you have to press a small tab. It holds the cable better and is a very nice feature.

do you know what the other woods at the neck are? what about the fretboard is it purpleheart too?

so this E string goes all the way through the body and the others stop at the bridge right?

I like that feature of the jack

if I do not go witht he trade for one of my Warwicks to him I plan on oferring money. how muchn would this bass be?

That fretboard is ebony...The neck, it is hard to tell. On the Soldier model it could be maple or it could be mahogany each with the purpleheart stripe. The body could be mahogany or swamp ash. They used both for the Soldiers. Looking in the body cavity on the back, you will probably see enough wood grain to know which it is. If you had a good picture of the neck, we could tell you the woods on that too.

Good luck

thanks for the info. the guy is selling this cheaper than yours. i like that yours is a 5 stringer but the color... not to much of a fan and also for the maple fretboard. I need to find out if the one I am looking at has a pourpleheart or ebony fretboard.

any price range this bass should be at?

I was tempted to mae an offer on that 5 stringer but I do not have the amount you're asking and also add shipping to it to offer you.

If he's selling that for less than the $1200 then it is a STEAL. Get it! You will not be disappointed. New that bass would be in the $2500 range. It could probably go used around the $1500 mark.

It's hard to tell the neck wood from that picture. It is probably mahogany.

These basses are great to play and I personally like them MUCH better than a Warwick. Just my .02

Let us know what you decide.

Also, the knobs (if Stock) are Volume / pickup blend / Mid / Bass and Treble stack / the switch should be a 3 position mid freq select. It's a standard Bart pre.

thank you. I see the point about the $1.2K price being low but there is another guy oferring me his way below that price and the color is white so it looks very smooth too.

Yeah, I was talking about the white one. I've seen a few of the white finishes in the shop over the years and they were smokin!!

I once bought an '02 soldier 4 string for around $650 a few years back. It was only a single pickup bass and only really had one sound. I kept it a couple years and sold it for $950 because I was GASSING for a Stingray 5... which I found used for $950. Sweet deal. If the Warrior had the pickup config of that white on I would still have the bass.

Looks like you've found yourself a sweet deal. If it were me, I would jump on it.

Good luck!
