Was there any good punk rock?

There will always be that kid in me that thinks that 2 Hard, 2 Fast, and 2 Loud is ALWAYS a great thing. And the idea of punk was always appealing from that standpoint.

But often, the playing and singing was just 2 Crude for my musical side to reconcile with, so although I thought things like Chrissie and The Pretenders and Elvis Costello were punk, obviously they really weren't alongside a lot of buzz saw bands like The Ramones and the real seminal originators.

So this has been a great thread for me in terms of re-visiting this and seeing what I missed.

Good point. But I think there are better ways to deal with these issues than pure rage. And it never really makes things any better in the end.

That is really the one thing that I would love to get across to people.

I don't want to reduce punk into being strictly about rebellious teens.





To really get an idea of what was happening with English punk, you have to realize that young people in 1975 were facing a VERY bleak future.

I love the Minutemen. They are not a punk band, as they themselves said.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Double Nickels on the Dime, or Ballot Result, but really everything they did.

The documentary “We Jam Econo” is also stellar. They’d play and the punks would literally spit in their faces - and they’d just keep on playing.

Punk - 10% great, 10% okay, 80% crap.You get the idea, anyway.

it’s the same with any style or genre of music. Some of it is tremendous, a lot of it not.

This is why I think genres are pointless. If you select what you listen to based on fairly narrow genres like, say, metal, you’re going to be missing out on the good stuff that isn’t metal. You’re also going to end up hearing a lot of dreck, because there’s hours and hours of really lousy metal out there to weigh against the good stuff.

When my old punk band played Philly Punx Picnic in 2012, my absolute favorite band of the day was this Chicago-based band called La Armada. Their members were all from the Dominican Republic and called their music "Latino Hardcore Fury." I still remember... the only ones in the pit were me (a dorky Indian dude) and this massive cadre of all the Mexican punks in the scene. The others there could NOT handle La Armada's intensity. Their music spoke to us with songs about imperial colonialism, immigrant rights, etc.

They've been around for decades and continue to make music with that same feral intensity. Their new stuff (from this year) is straight up ferocious!

I was in a bookstore with my mother a few years back and they started playing the first Fear album and she looked over at me and rolled her eyes. She could still tell the exact kind of music I like. Such a classic, iconic album with a lot more musicianship than appears at first glance.

Trololololol. The original post isn’t serious, right?

Obviously punk is hella good and broad enough to be appreciated from a lot of angles. So many badass bass players in that genre too that deserve to be studied seriously.

The post did get me hot under the collar and have me wanting to write out a screed about respecting the nuances and utility of all the musical stylings out there, but then I remembered not to feed the trolls.

And so many more (do it yourself. Make your own scene. Speak your own voice).

Assume Circle Jerks somewhere.

That plus grudge (mudhoney!) are my non classic rock favs.

Just friends getting together and jamming out whatever they want to say at any skill level. Just be heard.

I have no recollection of that but no matter, they are/were entitled to if they did, obviously. Minutemen is punk to me.

Broadly, arguments about what isn't punk are tedious and more often than not flawed, IMO.
