Rock and Roll began as a bunch of young kids who had a little talent (not a lot) and a lot of teen/young adult angst and energy, flailing away expressing the feelings of being young. Punk is very much in that vein.

It wasn’t a genre I embraced wholeheartedly, but like any sub-genre, there are good and bad tunes and bands, and nobody gets to be the “authority” and tell you which is which.

That's false. Rock & Roll began with Ike Turner, Little Richard and Chuck Berry to name a few, they were FAR from kids. Learn your history dude.

I can understand why people come on TalkBass to discuss things that they enjoy, but it’s always a bit baffling when the post is about things they DON’T like.

Is it to convince people who like those things they they’re wrong, or to stake out a position of supposed superiority?

I admit that I used to love the Ramones when I was a kid, but I don't really get most of it beyond that.

Just because something caused a big sensation doesn't mean that it had value. And it seems like the people who went to the concerts were always trying to find some new experience to make them happy. And it never really happened if they still talk about the past.

I'm old. When I was young, I compulsively sought out great live music. I saw a lot. Otis, Jimi, Rolling Stones, Muddy, Miles, Aretha, B.B., Ray Charles, James Brown, Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, Thelonious, et al., more than you can imagine; I could fill this page.

If you saw the Clash and X live, in their prime, your jaw would be on the floor. They delivered the goods. If you couldn't dig 'em, it wasn't them, it was you.

I personally love the Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph-style punk from the '90s. The musicianship is generally at a high level and there's an emphasis on melody.

Bands include: NOFX (my favorite); Bad Religion; No Use for Name; Lagwagon; Bracket; Strung Out; Tilt; Frenzel Rhomb; Hi Standard; Propagandhi; Rancid; etc.

R.I.P Buddy Holly, but he was a semi adult.....your post said "kids invented R&R" which is STILL FALSE!!!!! I guess you never heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, she was FARRRRR from a "kid". Hate to break it to you but kids did NOT invent R&R, it was invented by adults. As I said previously LEARN YOU HISTORY DUDE!!!!

I don’t get Yacht Rock; it represented the depth of mediocrity that ‘rock’ had sunk to in the 70’s, and how bland people’s tastes were. Which drove me to Punk Rock and all the related stuff…that which led up to it, and then the laterally connected genres in its time. How’s that for an answer?

I think it's appreciation for the simpler things in life. A Summer Breeze is a more interesting subject than 1. Beating on a brat with a baseball bat, 2. Yelling at your parents, 3. Etc.
