Was there any good punk rock?

What do you think?

A jazz-college-graduate friend of mine who'd been struggling for a few years as a full-time, professional musician once asked me, "What makes any music good?"

My answer: When music strikes a chord in the listener's heart; when music rings true in the listener's mind; when music touches the listener emotionally, psychologically, or sentimentally, that makes it good. Regardless how well it abides by music theory or adheres to established norms, if it stirs a listener inside in a way that feels personally meaningful, that makes it good.

By this standard, long after the Ramones, lots of punk bands continue making good music.

The goodness of music is value, regardless the genre.

First 2 GREAT "punk" bands that come to my mind are Dead Kennedys and Minutemen. Great for just the music aspect alone; then add another layer of great on account of the lyrics. Remember punk isn't really a music style anyway, it's a philosophy of life. I think the Beatles, Hendrix, and Stravinsky were punk as #$%&, for example.

As never into punk in the UK punk heydays but there are certainly a smattering of tracks by punk bands that I enjoy… The Clash, Killing Joke, The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, The Skids, The Stranglers, Siouxie and The Banshees, The Members, Sham 69 and others show up on my listening list now and again…

First 2 GREAT "punk" bands that come to my mind are Dead Kennedys and Minutemen. Great for just the music aspect alone; then add another layer of great on account of the lyrics. In the '90s I played a few times, in their rehearsal studio in Chicago, with Sigh Moan (from the Dwarves) and Mark Specter Spec (Specula). It was fun.

Just because something caused a big sensation doesn't mean that it had value. And it seems like the people who went to the concerts were always trying to find some new experience to make them happy. And it never really happened if they still talk about the past.

True story, I actually witnessed Wesley suddenly kick someone on a CTA bus once. The whole running "Hell Ride" theme in Wesley's song writing was rooted in his mental health reality. I have a lot of rando Wesley memories/stories from the '90s.

Punk rock is the musical soil were I was born. It taught me a lot and shaped many of my views about life and music.
