Washington Redskins name

Well stated Tony. It's like the terms Oriental and Asian, both are racist terms commonly in use. Japanese, Chinese, Philipino, Korean, Vietnamese, are usually thrown into the "Asian" (used to be Oriental) category because people most times don't look beyond the initial impression based on certain physical characteristics.
As for Daniel Snyder, he could rename them the Washington Braves and keep their iconic trademark and give some dignity that many see as lacking in the name Redskins. After all in the midst of increasing urban violence the Baltimore Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards which image wise appealed to season ticket holders and seemingly also decreased crime on the streets.

That's kinda what I've been thinking the whole time. "Just rename them the 'Braves' or something"

For the people that wonder what Native Americans think about the name, may I suggest driving to a reservation and pull up to a store or somewhere where a group of men standing around and holler out your window, "Any of you redskins know how I can get to the casino?"
I guarantee you will get the same responce as if you did the same thing in Compton and use the N word
I need to learn more, but these folks see it different: http://indians.org/articles/sioux-indians.html

I'll admit, I paused reading when I saw "...The name Sioux actually means “little snake”, which was given to the tribe by the Chippewa Indians."

Carry on.
That is funny.
The Ojibwe (not Chippewa) were mortal enemys of the Lakota.
so, yeah, they may have used some not so nice terms for them

Just out of curiosity, where in the pecking order do we think this particular topic would fall among the following challenges during a nation-wide gathering of actual Native Americans:

Loss of Identity and Assimilation
Tribal Sovereignty
Revitalizing Native Culture
Preserving Families
Lack of Economic Development
Health: Substance Abuse, Diabetes

My guess is that the team name issue wouldn’t even make the agenda.

How weird! I was just reading the same stuff on PBS.org! The topic we are discussing here probably wouldn't make the list because the valid topics you listed are too difficult, so they'll go ignored.

They'd get even less sympathy for those. There are people who think the casinos are too much.

Kind of like the GA flag. It never bothered me but I could see why some people found it offensive, so change it. Just a flag, just a team name. In a league featuring the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals they can't really claim to be bound by tradition. Change the name, logo, sell bunch of new merchandise, profit.

New name? Washington Deficits? Bipartisan Bickerers? K Street Krooks? Sound Biters?

I'm learning a new lesson here. As a mostly Caucasian man, I can only point out what I feel is racism towards Caucasians. So much for that ability to empathize that I thought was a good trait.

Sir, you have totally misunderstood completely missed the focal point. Anyone can point out racism and should call out anyone on being racist.

I am talking about the white people who say the name redskins isn't offensive it's not their place to say that they are not the victim.

Not to mention I am white too and empathizing towards another culture. Anyone of any race should speak up and say those comments or words are racist. My wife is black and my son half black racist remarks hurt me even though I'm white. I always speak up when I hear racist stuff because people then learn they can't just say racist stuff to anyone and my wife and son can live in a better world.

AND we get to the crux of the biscuit. The die-hard football fan is more than willing to part with his (her) money to support their team. Ticket sales would hardly be affected, millions would still sit on their rears to watch the games, and merchandising would still result in an s-ton of new shirts being sold / licensing fees to the owners.

Thanks to the power of the internet, this thread has a thing at the bottom to click for Washington Redskins gear.

I know some Native Americans who have a pow-wow every single year to send power to the Washington Redskins losing. It's been working for a very long time.

If the team ever wants to win a championship, it will have to change the name.
