If called out I say "Excuse me, but are you inferring that I actually played some notes correctly ?"
At my last gig on the weekend - I had shut my wireless transmitter off while the facility did a presentation. Of course I forgot to turn the transmitter back on when the band started up again. There was no bass until my wireless synced up - probably only around 10 seconds or so but felt much longer..
If your fret is ok, you'll end up a 4th, 5th, or 7th. off. You could do a lot worse!
Usually, one bad note is the beginning of a downward spiral of several bad notes trying to find the right one. I've gotten better because most of the time, I just turn it into a bass run. Sometimes, I will hit the wrong note again on purpose to make people think that I am very progressive and play outside the box.
Yeh, I say fretless takes away the entire concept, which is why I mainly stick to fretless! ( that is a joke )
I have never missed a note. From time to time my band will miss a note, but they drink.
Ya, I usually just look at the pianist and give him a confused look to make him think he did something wrong...
"I'm leaving some space in the mix for you guys" tends to satisfy the band.
Well said and very true I think. This is (for me) also the case with timing. One off note timingwise results in a next bar where I am trying (searching) to get the timing on the spot again.

Whatever wrong note I might play is only wrong because that particular song isn't being played yet, which means I am operating more so in the future as well as in the present.

Because I'm human? I've seen Rush literally trainwreck in front of 12,000 people. Besides, there is not a single performing musician on Earth who is 100% perfect 100% of the time!

Seriously, I don't think about missed notes while performing, as that is a recipe for more missed notes.
No need for excuses. If I miss a note because I am not good enough, didn't prepare well enough, or wasn't paying attention; then I own up to my faults and try to overcome them. If somebody busts on me, as long as it is done in good spirit, it's a good opportunity for everyone to laugh. No need to take oneself to seriously; so, sometimes I even bust on myself: "Did you here that....Awesome!"
