What album has kept you alive?

Have dealt with some dark stuff in my life, and Tool -AEnima "saved my life" on more than one occasion. Not literally..as even with some of the horrific stuff life has thrown me, the unknown seems scarier. But the album definitely helped me through some really tough times in life where I probably could have been pushed closer to a ledge. I still get goosebumps from the song the album is titled after, but in general there were times I felt like I could relate to any given emotion in any song. But most of their music when I was that age, turned out to be great at helping me sort through emotions.

OP - I've been through some terrible stuff in life. And I'm not saying it's any better or any worse than losing a loved one. But hold onto your good memories. Those you've loved, been loved by, even if they're few and far between. And most certainly, keep playing bass, or some instrument.

As rough as life can be.. it certainly is something else making music with somebody isn't it? I'd say that's a statement/question that works both figuratively and literally. The world is harsh. But that handful of good memories, the hope for more of that in the future keeps us drudging on.

I'll add, meeting my current band, after not being a fit with so many other people.. well I've been in one of the best moods of my life for several months honestly.

So sorry to hear about your loss. We lost my mother in law a few weeks ago. It's been tough. To answer your question, generally The Clash - any of the first three albums (through London Calling) and the EP Black Market Clash pumps me up.

Oh yeah. 'Magnificent Seven' was rocking today. The repetitive grove kept going long after the song ended. Just played.....

So I'm horribly depressed - my father died, we were supposed to scatter ashes on the ocean today but weather is bad, it's my birthday and he's not here, etc.

So I need music today.

I asked my wife, 'Slayer or ambient music'? (I haven't finished my coffee yet)

I picked Aerosmith Rocks (the first album I stole from my sister when I was a kid)

It worked, it rocks, full volume with Beats headphones, it rocks today.

My question is, what music has kept you going when the going is hard? All suggestions welcome

After the neighbors wake up I will be grabbing a PBass and need to play loud today.
Hey Brother I know it's quite a bit of day that's passed since your OP and you're probably riding a roller coaster of emotions so, with that all I'll say is get through the storm and do the best you can. Sorry for your loss. In the meantime, give this a listen if you want. This seems to be one of my top go to bands for thinking times.

So sorry. The Beatles, Abbey Road. Simon and Garfunkel.

ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY.

The gutteral honesty and thoughtfulness in all your replies is truly amazing! Even visceral at times.

There are some old favorites and a lot of new music for me to explore. I promise to listen to every suggestion with the intent you all shared.

AMAZING.....

Thanks very much for the lift - undeniably appreciated and needed.

Did I say amazing? Amazing

Sgt. Pepper. It always transports me to a better place.

Thirteen years ago this month I was dealing with the loss of my dad and Slipknot's Vol. 3 was the soundtrack to that time in my life. The aggression and emotion on that album were perfect for me, but Over the Rainbow by The Blanks can do wonders as well. I'm very sorry for your loss, and remember to lean on those who love you, even if it's just getting you out doing something to take your mind off of things for a couple hours.

Peace and wheelies

Matt

Sorry for your loss... :(
I have a slightly different playlist during my low days... Still the Who or related, Face Dances and Empty Glass and Chinese Eyes got me through that. These songs sound to me like literally how Pete pulled through his own depression. :)

So you all know, my Dad was pretty great. Even in his last days of consciousness on this planet his spirit shined. When I would tell the nurses I'm here to see Dave, their immediate response was something like, "OMG he is so sweet and kind, a real gentleman." Even in death's crosshairs. True grace under pressure.

The other day I told my wife how I was an ASS to someone for no good reason and felt like crap. I said my Dad would never make someone feel bad for no reason (he would kill for family though).

So we have a new saying in our house - "What would Dave do?"
And the answer will always be, the right thing for the sake of being a good human...legacy.

Thanks for listening.

I'd say Dave did one heck of a good job raising a son! You sound like a good person.

Btw, I'm 63, and my parents are gone, so I know what it feels like to lose them. I miss them alot. Also gone is our daughter who was killed in a car crash eight years ago at the age of 21. What that latter occurrence taught me is, growing old is a privilege that not everyone gets to enjoy. I don't know how old your Dad was, but it sounds like he got to live a full life. Not everyone gets to do that. So be thankful that your Dad was one of the lucky ones!

This one. A reminder of my youth; a reminder of happier times; and also, of the day that, for me, "The Music" really did die - and what was lost to the music world. It's hard not to smile when I listen this - CD, actually. I can't imagine listening to a Buddy Holly song and not smiling... This "album" always always makes me feel better. It's the only music I have on my phone. And, for an old, grumpy Luddite like me? That's saying something...

I am rarely speechless. Thank you. Amazing.

My brain is physiologically unable to fathom losing a child. Cheers to you for carrying on strong. You're a better man than I.

I can emphasize, my birthdays December 14th and my dad died December 15th.
11 years today.
I don't think there's any one album or band or genre that gets me through life, its music in general , whether it be Cannibal Corpse or the Carpenters.
My dad did however love Elton John Funeral for a friend, I like to tip back a 12 pack and give it a rip this time of year

For what it's worth I always try to keep in perspective that my dad loved me and wanted the best for me, he worked hard so I would have food and a roof over my head, he wanted to see me flourish and enjoy life, his loss was of course profound but his sacrifices raising me wasn't for me to sit around and mourn , I feel as though living the best life I can is what would have made him the happiest
