What album has kept you alive?

I can emphasize, my birthdays December 14th and my dad died December 15th.
11 years today.
I don't think there's any one album or band or genre that gets me through life, its music in general , whether it be Cannibal Corpse or the Carpenters.
My dad did however love Elton John Funeral for a friend, I like to tip back a 12 pack and give it a rip this time of year

you know

thanks for the brutal honesty

on the playlist (Elton and a 12-pak, not Cannibal Corpse...ok, maybe)

I hope life looks up for you soon and be sure to let us all know what cool new albums you discover

Here's a couple you're not likely to see anyone else recommend.
Not sure these have saved my life but I can say they have improved it!

Porcupine Tree - in absentina

Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase

The Gathering - Mandylion

Casualties of Cool - self titled

Ghost - infestissumam

Godflesh - street cleaner

Jessica Lea Mayfield - tell me

So I'm horribly depressed - my father died, we were supposed to scatter ashes on the ocean today but weather is bad, it's my birthday and he's not here, etc.

So I need music today.

I asked my wife, 'Slayer or ambient music'? (I haven't finished my coffee yet)

I picked Aerosmith Rocks (the first album I stole from my sister when I was a kid)

It worked, it rocks, full volume with Beats headphones, it rocks today.

My question is, what music has kept you going when the going is hard? All suggestions welcome

After the neighbors wake up I will be grabbing a PBass and need to play loud today.
Can't go wrong with Aerosmith, especially the old stuff. "Rocks" is my favorite Aerosmith album. And their "Toys In The Attic" tour was my first concert at the ripe old age of 11 yrs old, I went with my older cousin who passed away 4 years ago this last November. So any of the old Aerosmith brings a smile to my face.

My father is 97 years old now ...hopefully I will feel pretty okay when he passes on.

As far as record albums that make me think of him:

Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Frank Sinatra - Strangers in the Night
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream and Other Delights
Louis Armstrong
Count Basie Orchestra
Barbara Streisand - Any of her first four or five albums
Glen Miller
Duke Ellington
Benny Goodman

As far as music that has kept me alive? ...some brings back great memories and some brings back not so great memories.
I am very grateful that recorded music can do that...it's incredible magic. :bassist::bassist::bassist:

This thread reminds me of Richmond's story from The IT crowd.

I guess for me it would be Pink Floyd's The Wall. I've been isolating myself from people and building walls all my life to cope with the horrible events of my childhood. I'm never quite comfortable unless everyone around me dislikes me just a little bit. Not enough to want to lash out, but just enough to stay away. PTSD and depression is no joke.

Hope you find healthier coping mechanisms than I did.

So sorry for your loss!
I found my father dead when I was 28. He was 58.

I'm so sorry to hear, my condolences!

I would say either "gravity X" by Truckfighters, or any of Bob Marley's albums.

Bob's stuff is very uplifting and love inducing. Truckfighters seems to be very uplifting and energy building for me. When cranked it really let's me get lost in the music and escape for a little while.

Tough day, no doubt. I would have to say the "Doors". Their over-all sound was hypnotic. When the Music's Over in particular. It's good to have music for times like yours, you will be creating another soundtrack for the life that's yours. Godspeed to your dad. Mine has been gone 30 years and there is not a day I don't think fondly of him.

Todd Rundgren 'Healing.' Trust me.
My first thought was Nearly Human by Todd.
When i need a positive uplift nothing beats Earth Wind and Fire's Gratitude.
Especially For You by the Smithereens is also on my list of significant music.
Surrender by Cheap Trick always gets me going when i'm stuck in a rut.
Fitzcaraldo by The Frames is a raucous scream from beginning to end.
and this, Dark Days by Fergus O'Farrell, is probably my favorite song of all time. I think it's the most human song ever written.
