I think John Mc gets a tough reputation because his music is so demanding that you have to be somewhat tough to get band members to play it right, even guys who are at the insane level of the musicians he hires.

Here's a tip for you and anyone else that do not seem to understand what is expected of you when you get hired for a gig. If the person that hires you tells you to turn down, turn up, turn off, that's what you do. If you can't follow directions, people won't hire you no matter how "stunning" your abilities may be.

Look at it from this perspective;Over the course of JM's over 40+yr career he has had the opportunity to play with or hear all of the top bassist in his genre of music and has basically worked with everybody HF was influenced by so maybe he wasn't a "stunned"by HF's ability as someone else might be because he heard it all before and in the end behavior trumps ability.

Hey it happens. I've been fired and hired. I was even asked back by a group that fired me ( for no good reason). Of course I didn't take the job back. It's a learning experience and not the end all. If you never do anything you won't make mistakes. I say make mistakes, learn from them and keep it moving. There is another gig out there for you.

Yes that's why I say they are right and I'm wrong.

Kind to think of it, JM always hire bassist with tons of chops these years. Like Mathews garrison, HF, Tony Grey, Dominic do piazza and they share a similar style. Ah maybe dominic is different ..

Some times when a musician gets fired from a great gig and the person who did the firing is highly respected in the industry(not talking about fans), word gest out and it some times takes a while for the fired musician to get another great gig, if ever.


That's usually how it works when word gets out that at the end of the day you're a jerk. No matter how talented you are. Especially when you're attempting to take over the role of the person who fired you.

That is fantastic! The snare was a bit too loud but I loved the sound of the track overall and the liveliness that the mix had.

Jauqo, you say that any of us could have pulled of that gig that may be true but I really dig the style the Hadrien brought to this one. I can't think of anyone I'd rather hear in his place. The cool thing about this song, at least to me, is that it's a pop tune that brings more advanced musicianship to the table making it sound that much more interesting. It's pretty catchy too so I'm sure non-musicians will get a kick out of it too. I'd like to see more music like that.

Personally, I'm not sure if the Ken Smith he's playing is the "right" sound for what she's "trying" to do. You say that you can't think of anyone you'd rather hear in his place, I say there's a lot that I'm not hearing that I believe would make that track jump from all parties involved.

I've seen a bunch of videos with him and Eric Moore, possibly the best new jazz/rock drummers around. It doesn't seem like he has done anything high profile since he got fired from Mclaughlin's band.

Which is why he needs to play as loudly as possible so that people can hear that he's the best player in the world, regardless of whether or not he's being hired by someone else and instructed to play with the appropriate volume. Oh well, such is the life of being the best.

I'd guess for the same reason that most people get fired - not doing the job they were hired for.

And I can understand that. Being that young and talented I think he had to mature musically. I remember watching him a number of years ago and being amazed by his (admittedly jaw dropping) chops but turned off by the sheer onslaught of notes. I think as a young kid with that much talent/skill it's hard to dial it back even when the guy that hired you is telling you to.

That said, I think he's clearly a better, more mature player now while still having amazing technical abilities. And for what it's worth I like his sound a lot better with the Fodera than the Smith.
