Yeah this.
And (sigh) again, back when this bass was new it was not a holy grail of any kind. That would be no different from cutting in a J pickup on a brand new P bass today (or whatever mod one might do). It's just a thing. It's not a travesty. Pop the screws out and rock it with a couple tiny holes in it. Or, even better, keep it and come up with the most ridiculous explanation of what it is you can think of. It could be a great conversation starter.
"What? This? Well, most people don't know that Jaco and Jamerson actually played in a band together called Thumptastica back in the early 70s. This bass was owned and played by both of them. This little booger here was a cigarette holder they used while playing. I've had it tested. It still has both of their saliva on it as we speak. Thanks for asking."
That's called "natural". Aka - a little less pink and a little more woodier than Barbie.
I am not looking into buying a vintage Fender, molested or otherwise.
I just wondered what the thing is supposed to be since it kind of looks like it was made to be fitted to the upper horn. I also thought that it is a rather steep price they are asking considering the bass is not in original condition by any standard.

Wow. That is hugely expensive. Would be cheaper to fly to the US, but a bass brand new, enjoy a vacation, and fly back.

Laugh at that thing if you want to, but the original owner never once lost his keys at a gig.
I initially didn't like it, but seeing how much it has angered people is making me like it more and more.

Come on guys, its obviously a device specially designed for guitars and basses played in high crime areas. Car jacking along with motorcycle and bicycle theft is rampant in that part of Germany. This theft deterrent device was a very rare option on that year bass. You're supposed to slide your bicycle chain or cable lock through it and secure it to a building column or other immovable object while you're on break.
As for the pic of the back of the headstock - that's a very rare vintage prototype of the fat finger. Its meant to eliminate dead spots on the neck by changing the harmonic frequency of the headstock. In fact this one is the deluxe version that allows the A string tuner to be rotated slightly out of position for extra fine tuning. I don't think there were more than two or three of these made.
Also, if you look at the back of the bass you'll plainly see it has the ultra rare diagonal grain layout that was an option very few people selected.
Somebody needs to snatch this bass quick, the seller doesn't know he's sitting on a gold mine - you'll never see all these rare options on one bass again!

Cheeky Monkeys, it's a clip to hold your child in check, while you are performing. Simply put the child in their harness, attach the lanyard to the bass and you'll never lose your kid again... also works well at the end of the gig to hold the lead singer on stage for the load out.

OBVIOUSLY...it's an amazing fix for the 5th-17th fret DEAD-SPOT that Fender basses are so famous for...(I assumed EVERYONE that owns a FENDER did this!)
maybe it's for some kind of lock/chain to keep it safe during breaks at the local dive bar .. ?!!?
I guess now we finally get to know how Captain Hook's bass would look like !
