What Overdrive pedals are you using?

All passive p basses here, and I'm using a bass soul food, hardwire cm2, ehx glove, ibanez ts9b, dod bass overdrive or jlo hyperdrive for drive tones, and either a bass fuzz deluxe, or bbmdlx for the fuzzy stuff

Please overdrive pedals only. I keep asking for people's advice(outside of talkbass) on what overdrive pedal to get and I just get loads of people showing me fuzz pedals.

I not looking for a specific sound just wondering; What Overdrive pedals do you find are the best!?

Cheers:thumbsup:

EDIT: Guitar pedals used with bass welcome!

Tech 21 VT Bass, I use this mainly for the speaker simulation function when plugged straight into the PA, but from time to time I do use it for grind. My ODs are the Darkglass VMT and Way Huge Pork Loin. The VMT Era knob is set at about 9 o'clock for a more vintage sound, whereas I use the Pork Loin when I need a more bluesy grind.

I purposely use a Pedaltrain Mini to limit myself to a small number of pedals and, for me, that means I only have room for two overdrives at a time. So far, I keep changing my mind about which two I like enough to put on my board and also changing my mind about their order in the signal chain.

Right now I have my Xotic Bass BB going into my Bass Soul Food and that seems to do a great job of giving me a bassier, fuller overdrive (the BB, I really the bass EQ control on it), a brighter or raspier overdrive (the BSF with the Drive up and the Treble up), and also a nice sounding combination of the two for those rare occasions when I need more than a lightly ovedriven sound.

Besides those two, I also have:

- Darkglass Vintage Microtubes - I really like how the VMT sounds by itself, but I really want to use two OD's on my board and so far I haven't been wow'd by how I've paired my other pedals with this one. But I keep trying it and playing with different combinations.

- Bearfoot Blueberry - Just about the same opinion as with my VMT. Also, it seems that most people love how well it does a warm vintage-y sound but when I have the Nature knob below about 12:00-1:00 it starts to sound way too bassy to me. But with the Nature around 1:00-3:00 with the Drive around midway it sounds great to me.

- Joyo American Sound - I've spent a lot more on my other ODs so I sometimes feel guilty for liking the American and I take it off the board. I know that's stupid. This is a pretty nice sounding pedal and the Voice control and the 3-band post-OD EQ makes it a pretty versatile one, too. I need to give it a fairer shot than I've been giving it.

If you can afford it, the Okko Basstard is really nice. The "+" control is a nice feature for me, because I like grit but having lots of drive just isn't so nice for some tunes. Very warm overdrive, reminds me of a cranked tube pre-amp. It also seems to play very nicely with other preamps, like the Bass Driver I feed it into.

Before that, I used a DOD FX-91 I modded with 1N4002 clipping diodes and a JRC4558 opamp as well as a single resistor mod (Spoiler: it's a modified Tube Screamer) and liked the tone of that as well, especially cranked. The blend control on that is a little meh, but it works.

If you don't mind some noise, the Ibanez PD-7 is a nice overdrive I used for a while as well. The attack switch was an interesting touch. I had one that I overhauled all the cheap mylar caps with polypropylene film, and that took care of almost all the hiss. If only Ibanez had re-made it with a footswitch between OD and Distortion.

Marshall Guv'nor is an okay one as well, a lot of guys have good luck with it but I always felt like the tonestack was a major weak point of that that killed it for me. The ProCo Rat can work as well, but those seem to suck out lows even with big input caps and coupling caps. I think the filtering has something to do with it.

A Fulltone Bass-Drive MOSFET is a nice one too, if you can find one and drop that kind of coin. It always reminds me of the driven tone on Soundgarden's Spoonman. I was kind of stuck between that and the OKKO for a while, but I found the Basstard at a lower price than the Fulltone.

These are ones I've had experience with and thought were good...but some are considered boutique.

I like it so much I bought 2 ... But my guess is no one here has ever used one (or even considered it) that would be the VOX Ice 9 OD a two stage pedal stage 1 is standard OD stage 2 a 14db boost, two voices vintage and modern and a dedicated BASS control, so there is no low end loss. I keep one on my main board and a second in my gig bag battery powered ... If it didn't say VOX on it and have Joe Satrianis signature on it it could be sold as a bass OD, it may be the great "sleeper" pedal of our time.

Just got one,and you have absolutely right.Awesome pedal for bass.I love it.Made in Japan. And there is not only good in sound, the looks is also gorges .

Another great pedal that i got is the Rocktron Austin Gold.Is Tube screamer clone i thing but in a good way.

They both have extra control of the bass frequencies, before the overdrive stage.

For extreme distortion i use the Roctron Zombie. Is a Boogie Rectifier clone distortion.
I use also the Joyo American sound and plenty overdrives of my Zoom B3 and Ms-60B.

The FX91 is a modified tubescreamer?? Maybe that's why I like mine so much!!

At present:

Wren and Cuff Phat Phuk B (dirty boost)
Southampton Fifth Gear (dirty boost/light OD) (I actually run two of these)
Wounded Paw Attack Goat (a fuzz that I run at low gain and use more like an OD)
smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine (another fuzz that I run at low gain and use more like an OD)
smallsound/bigsound Mini (overdrive/distortion)
Master Effects Scrambled Eggs (clone of the old/original/authentic Ampeg Scrambler circuit, it is NOTHING like the current "Scrambler" that is out)
Hudson Broadcast (preamp/boost)

In the past...too many to list. :)

Oh god, overdrives....

I currently have:

Mountainking Maximum Overdrive - my preferred "clean yet a little gritty" tone
JohnK Gamma - used in higher gain settings for something raunchier or as my "clean yet a little gritty" tone when my guitarist wants to use my Mountainking Maximum Overdrive.
Fuzzrocious BDPG - for stacking with the JohnK Gamma and / or the TAFM

I also have owned and used the following for lower gain stuff:

Brimstone Audio XD-2: Fantastic pedal that I never used to its fullest potential
Fuzzrocious Rat Tail: Cool, but I needed something different
Swell B-Drive v.1: a little too mid boosted for my taste. I may try a different tube to see if that helps
Dr. Scientist the Elements: Just never bonded with it when I owned it
Darkglass B3K: Super noisy with my Ric, didn't like the mid scoop
Darkglass VMT: Again, super noisy with my Ric, didn't like the mid boost

I'm always on the lookout for something cool for this role. I think up next on the chopping block will be a Mountainking Behemoth, a DOD 250, or a BFJE Blueberry. Really, I'm just going to try everything Mountainking puts out. I'd like to try a B7K, but it is admittedly a really low priority given previous experiences with the B3K and VMT. I have a feeling that I'll never quite get back to where I want it until I move back to a full tube rig, but the experiment has been a lot of fun.
