What to do about confederate flag bass?

Got nothing against the flag itself aside from all the bad things that are/were associated with it.
That being said, it's not attractive the way it sits. I would have to agree that a full refinish would be the way to go, or at the very least cover the whole thing. With what, I couldn't tell you.

The flag has a historical significance that carries more weight than the intent of whoever displays it.

Unfortunately, you are correct. It is not the flag's fault it was adopted as a symbol by some pretty unsavory organizations. And the flag depicted on that Peavey never had any "official" standing.
It is none of the three flags that represented the Confederate nation. It is the "Confederate battle flag," unfurled over infantry units, but based on the Confederate naval jack.

Me, I'd leave it as is and try to use it as a catalyst to get people to actually research the history of that flag.

As to the Gadsden flag -- AFAIK Gadsden, Alabama has no flag.

That symbol is a "choosing sides" kind of thing, that can not be resolved.

I will say this about people and racism: it seems about as logical to discriminate people based on skin pigmentation as to discriminate basses' tonal characters based on the color of the paint jobs. In this case, the paint job carries the symbol. I would remove the symbol unless you feel like picking sides; which itself is kind of a childish thing; but, we sadly do it all the time.

I believe you mean Georgia or Mississippi...

Man, Alaska has the only flag I find even somewhat appealing on that list. Most of them look like government office flags...and then there's Arizona...trying to act like some South Asian republic flag...or Ohio saying "F this! We're not square!"

NM has a cool flag. TX, TN, AL, CO, and NC are all decent. All the rest are stupid or have a boring state symbol on them.

As for the Arizona flag:
The flag of Arizona consists of 13 rays of red and weld-yellow on the top half, the colors of the flag of Spain, representing the 13 original states. The red and yellow also symbolize Arizona's picturesque sunsets. The copper star represents the copper mining industry in Arizona. The rest of the flag is colored blue, representing the Colorado River.
Not that I've ever even been to Arizona but it's a great flag...very bold, unlike several others which I won't bother to name.
I wouldn't, however, want to paint my bass like any flag...and I wouldn't want to hang my bass on a flagpole.
