It was a '74' Japanese copy of a Jazz Bass, had black nylong strings that I recall. It was actually kind of decent, had painted some airbrush psychodelic green color with black and gray; wich I still had the body.
Fender JP90. Man, I know they were made in America and people jack their prices these days because of it, but I was seriously a piece of junk. I paid 225 NEW for it in 1996

mine first one is my pink Spencer P-bass. I got it new, at a flea market for $70. It is missing the string tree (which I plan on getting one later), so the D & G strings rattle. I bought it in Apr. of 2007, not knowing how to play it! I can't rid it b/c she is my first bass and I learned how to play bass with it. Sentimental value!
A P Bass. If I knew any better, I would have bought a Squier VM Jazz and saved myself some dough.
It was a Blazer, and a complete piece of crap! It was way to big for my tiny hands, and stupidly heavy as well.
And every couple of times you turned the volume knob up to full, or even just turned it alot all the wiring would come loose and cause some horrible sounds through my amp, and then shortly after that the wiring would completely fall off, and i'd need to take it to get repaired!
So glad i don't have that bass anymore!

a white cort 4 string headless bodyless POS... I think we bought it out of a jc penny catalog.. late 70's .. inside of a year the electronics had fried out finally mid 80's traded it for a beat to poop horner acoustic guitar.. I still play the horner great sound for around the campfire and I dont care if it gets rained on...
I had a Cort Curbow 4-stringer, extremely versatile bass with nice ergonomics, but I never liked the sound so I sold it.
That's cool! The gray bass at the left started out as a GTX 4 string that I added EMG's and upened up the horns and painted solid gray.
I still have it. I bought it when I was 17 for a little over $100. Still a great playing bass with a super fast neck. I just tore it apart last week to start a complete makeover.
My first bass (and it was a long time ago!) was a fairly standard black Fender Precision Bass, like the one in the image (that isn't the actual one as i don't have it any more!). Currently on the look out for a new bass to start learning on again (i was never very good!)
Mine was a cherry red Gremlin bought from a Grandpa's. (For those of you not from the midwest, Grandpa's or Grandpa Pidgeon's was like a small Wal-Mart). It was a piece. Yeesh.
Mine was a National copy of a Hofner Beatle. My parents put up half the money--it was $50.00 total.
It actually didn't sound too bad.
I've since had 4 "Beatle" basses.....2 Hofners, 2 copies.
Wish I still had my first bass.

My absolute first bass was a horrible Cort short scale back in the late 70's. It was absolute garbage to the highest power! I tried to find a picture, but no luck.
My first *real* bass was a Yamaha BB300. Loved that bass and wish I still had it.

First bass was a black 81' Washburn Scavenger. Heavy beast that it is. Still own it. Added a kahler tremelo back in 87', as well as some active EMG's. (it was the 80's, I was in High School, and was a big fan of Billy Sheehan. Still am.....)Sounds OK, but never had the sound I heard in my head.
I bought a natural finished (mahogany, if I remember correctly) ESP LTD B-204. I didn't have it for long and I kind of regret not keeping it longer than I did. I know a lot of people a) associate ESP with metal heads and b) look down on the B series as low end, but that was a pretty nice bass for the price (I think it was about $399 when I bought it in mid-2000). It also was pretty well made, sounded nice, was pretty versatile, and was comfortable to play.
Unfortunately I let the name influence me I traded it for a Fender. I should have kept it and bought the Fender. And it sucks that I can't say I was young and stupid and didn't know better because I was about 37 or 38 when I started playing bass.
