Along those lines, there's an old movie noir I like called "Nightmare Alley" (1947) with Tyrone Powers as the lead. (There's also a 2021 version of the same story, haven't seen it).

Anyway, Powers was a top star back in the day and typecast for romantic and swashbuckler leads. He got tired of that typecasting and wanted to broaden his acting range, so he "requested 20th Century Fox's studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck to buy the rights to the novel so he could star as the unsavory lead "The Great Stanton", a scheming carnival barker." (Wiki quote).

He had to fight for the movie. The studio figured he was best marketable in his current casting roles, thinking this darker role would hurt his image. Failure at the box office, but he garnered excellent critical reviews. Considered a classic today in film noir.

If some of y'all like catching old movies, this one might be worth your time.

Dwyane Johnson is more charismatic than Vin Diesel. I like him in the Riddick movies. He's good at playing a tough guy against quippy villains. When he plays a real person it's embarrassing. The Rock is charming, but not a good actor.

They're stretching things too much. The recent episode was almost all filler. These books aren't long. I'm concerned they're gonna fill the season with non-original filler and try to get as many seasons out of each book as ratings allow. If they do that, the show will get cancelled before it ever gets a chance to tell the whole story. I just reread all the books and they're so good. Such a great story. I hope I'm wrong about the direction it looks like the show is going.

Just watched Ep 5. Ugh, they are killing this story. So disappointed.

I re-upped the apple plus subscription just for this show. Severance was great but season 2 is no where in sight. I'm cancelling.

Yes, there's plenty of great older stuff I've managed to not see yet. Not to mention, a ton of very good foreign TV series that most of us have never heard of.

I liked the TV ads for it when it came out, and I finally watched it this past Friday (it was streaming for free).

It didn't do well at all at the box office, which is a shame, because it's really good. I enjoyed it a lot, and I'm not a musicals guy. It probably paints an overly rosy picture of neighborhood and community, but hey...it's a movie!
