What's all the hate for Pete Wentz?

I have to disagree. I'd like to see someone play and sing Canary In a Coalmine without breaking a sweat.
Of course. But I think he's more of a generalist musician and singer/songwriter than a bass player like Marcus Miller, Flea, etc.
That's a different skill set than just playing bass. Think of a shredder vs. a singer that strums an acoustic guitar. One is a very technical specialist, the other is kinda a generalist. Or think of Eddie Van Halen vs. Dave Matthews. I'd call Eddie the better guitarist, and Dave the better singer/songwriter.
Sting is a singer/songwriter that also happens to play bass. Of course there are folks that do more than one thing really well like Geddy Lee. Anyway, I digress.
All I mean is in terms of bass players, he's not among the best. That doesn't mean he can't lay down a bass line and isn't a great songwriter and singer.

All three. Music is subjective, so it's ridiculous to categorize anything as "bad music." As for Lee Sklar, you know who he is.
of course its just my opinion man - sorry I thought that was a given. still haven't had a chance to look up the skylar dude so I still have no clue on his band

Now could somebody explain to me why so many people make fun of Nickelback? I've heard fractions of 1 or 2 songs, and they sound no better or worse than a lot of other bands out there.

Could I be the only over 50 dude here that would admit to owning a FOB record? I'm a NWOBHM metal-head by nature. These guys write decent rock tunes, and they play real guitars and drums. I played a Wentz signature bass and thought it sucked. Does not make me hate him or the band. I am thankful there are still bands making rock and roll today and some of the kids are paying attention.
The comparison between him and Trujillo just blew my mind, he is light years better then Pete Wentz
ok just looked him up. sounds like hes been on a ton of stuff - just not anything that would have been on my radar. judging by his discography he must be pretty dang good.
I put Nickelback in the same category as Three Doors Down: music for the radio-loving masses. It's like rock and easy-listening had a baby. Congrats to them for living the dream, but I think they're crap.
Trujillo is a virtuoso. Cliff Burton fanboys just slag him off though.
easy guys,.. i happen to know Frank Wright III aka Trè Cool. Green Day came out of the shadows and exploded because they were the best of bunch. Frank in particular grew up in Mendocino County, Ca in the worst conditions. the local community would donate food and clothing to his family when he was of school age. who can blame them for getting rich and staying there. GD has stellar management. even so, they would come to the "hood" or invite us to their mansions and private parties. Trè would come to my house in "Dog Town" in West Oakland to jam the R&B, Funk, and Reggae with us. he'd take us out on his boat, sometimes leaving us the keys when he toured. my family went to his wedding years ago! Joe fed us for free at his diner in Emeryville whenever we stopped by! Billy Joe is just a very quiet reserved dude around us when he's not on stage.
just because they made/make megabucks does not constitute a "sell-out", imo.

Yeah - the Green Day hate is puzzling. Sounds like sour grapes to me.
When I first heard them I thought "THAT is what my band should sound like". I described my band at the time as playing "garage pop". The others in my band preferred "alternative" as a descriptor. Ugh.
This is worthy of a TB ban IMO.

I scratch my head about people who criticize artists who've become successful. I'd rather be known for writing hit songs than for being a virtuoso bass player. I'll take the money and the trim, anyday.
