What's all the hate for Pete Wentz?

Robert Trujillo is a very good bass player. Sting is no slouch, either.
If Pete Wentz gets the job done, guess what: he's a good bass player.

I love when people think there's a scorecard involved in popular music and musicianship.

How many years have we all had to endure nitwits commenting on what a "bad" drummer Ringo is, yet nobody can name a single Beatles song with bad drumming on it?

I've never got why people say Ringo is a bad drummer, I think his drumming is great. Listening to it almost makes me want to play the drums, but I lack the coordination. The isolated bass and drums for Hello Goodbye is on YouTube. It's great. I disagree that Wentz is a good bassist. Patrick Stump is a better bassist. His bass parts suck, mind-numbingly boring. Inaudible when live, and mixed down on albums, if he was so great, I think they'd have us hear the bass. Just because it's "pop-punk" doesn't mean it can't have a good bass part.

I hate Pete Wentz because he got to bang Ashlee Simpson and I didn't. OK? Happy? There it is.

That's Mikey Way, of My Chemical Romance, another band and player who are lightening rods for criticism.

I'll go on record as saying I am a big fan of MCR, indifferent to FOB. But in both cases, I literally have never really noticed the bass playing.

I'm a fan of both bands, and didn't really notice the bass in MCR stuff until Danger Days. He really stepped it up there. Love that disco-ish line on Planetary (Go). I don't get the criticism of Mikey Way, he's no John Entwistle, but he stayed out of TMZ and being everywhere on the Internet unlike Pete Wentz.

Both have moderately cool-looking basses as well. I'd buy the Mikey Way Mustang if I ever saw one in a shop at a good price.

Seriously? The most recorded bassist in the history of the world?

Why are people surprised when someone doesn't know a particular person. I think I've seen Sklar in a bass mag. If he's the 'most recorded' I've probably heard him too. But I listen to almost every genre, love thousands of bands, etc...
Is it that amazing someone couldn't name him by seeing a picture or in real life?

Maybe some people put a greater emphasis on memorizing celebrity. Maybe some don't.

Someone was giving another guy crap for not being sure (just thinking MAYBE) he saw that one bassist at Namm. You know the guy who's so amazing and did that stupid little kick on the kick drum in a Mr. Big video and then gave a big doofy grin? (that always irritated me so bad lol) Oh yeah Sheenan.

Sorry, but the attitude that you have to have instant recognition of every celebrity is just wrong imo. There are plenty of groups/songs that I love the bassline on but couldn't necessarily name who plays it.
Guess I'm just not as into hero worship as some.

The man knows his way around those 4 strings.

He also played an unlined fretless with The Police.

Saw Fallout Boy twice. Several times during each show Pete's hands were not on his bass but yet the bass line continued. My daughter even caught it a couple of times.

Stump was great.

Not surprising. I wish they'd replace him with someone else. The bass was totally inaudible when I saw them live in 2009.

I forgot about Planitary - You're right, that one has some cool octave stuff and a decent groove. My daughter asked me to teach it to her, so I got pretty familiar with that one. She's the one who turned me on to them in the first place, because she wanted to learn some of their tunes. Off to youtube I went and was an instant fan. Wish I had been clued in to them when they were together. Have seen Frank at two solo shows with my daughter. Great shows, much edgier stuff than MCR. Frank was clearly the punk in the band, and a really decent, genuinely nice guy. Met him at a meet and greet.

My daughter asked for a bass BEFORE she got into MCR. I got her a silver short scale Jaguar. THEN she gets into them and I see MW has a silver Mustang sig - DOH!

Did I miss the list? Where is it posted? You didn't put Ashton Barrett on your list but he is probably the most well known reggae bassist in history and played on almost every major album of that genre.
Guess he's just filed under 'etc...'

Enlighten me, what would I have heard Sklar on? Maybe he's a session bassist, which mean everyone has heard him but nobody knows his name. Maybe I liked his playing and read the album jacket which listed the band's bassist and not the studio bassist.

I would never have heard of Pete Wentz or his band if it wasn't for Talkbass and the fact that the last girl I slept with used to be the girlfriend of Fall Out Boy's drummer.

Well, they don't do it for me either, but I have seen them in concert (escort for my daughter and friends), and the put on a great show for the kids. Add to that, comments to the audience that were very positive, "be yourself" & "don't let anyone else define you" sort of messages that as a father, were comforting to hear. Far better than the things I used to hear at concerts 20/30 years ago.

And what is "punk" anyway? If you think you can define what it is and what it isn't, you have already lost the argument with me.



How long ago was this? I ask based on my earlier comment about an interview with him that I read.

That probably started about 7 years ago.
