What's On Your Workbench?

Since G&L doesn´t want to produce a Wunkay Tribute (L-1000 for laymen) I have to build one myself:

I just did the same myself recently:

I opted to add a push/pull volume pot so I could switch between the older “OMG” series mode and the modern non-OMG mode. I highly recommend this addition to the circuit as it adds even more tonal options to an already very versatile bass.

I assume thats switching between series and parallel…. “OMG”, what’s that stand for?

Literally "Oh My God". As far as I remember the story, the folks at G&L found the effect of the switch so surprising that they decided to call it the OMG switch.
I don’t think the guys at G&L were the ones who dubbed it the Oh My God setting but I could be wrong.

The OMG setting isn’t parallel. It’s the two coils in series but one of the coils has a big .1uF cap in parallel with it. The result sounds much like the single coil setting but with an enormous bass boost. The later L1Ks don’t have the cap and just use a typical series wiring. The pull switch I added allows me to choose between normal series and OMG series by eliminating the cap from the circuit; an option G&L has not offered that I know of.

So, to summarize: the toggle switch is parallel/single coil/OMG and the pull switch turns the OMG into normal series and has no effect upon the other two toggle switch positions.

It ain't rocket science, but you have the tools and the inclination, looks like a nice clean job of it too. Of course now you are screwed, this amateur Luthiery thing is addictive as hell.
Yes it is… my rabbit hole started with a kit bass. I don’t own one stock bass anymore, I can’t seem to not tinker one way or another but I haven’t done a from scratch build yet.

Looks good. How did the paint around the route fare?
Great actually… ive been having good luck with that… maybe blue tape between my template and the finish helps?… and a sharp bit for the first run.
 
Well I don't see anything I can use for a scale reference, but seems to me they're all small pieces. So unless you'll consider switching to uke building...
There are some viola sized tops in there. Some violin neck blanks and a lot of rib and bracing material.IMG_8380.JPG IMG_8381.JPG

Great looking bass! Do you have the wiring scheme for that?

Having both options on OMG would be perfect! Would add a push-push though. ;-) Hmm, I currently only have 500k log push/push or push/pull pots here. Did you use 250k or 500k?

I used a 250k because it’s what I had in my spare parts drawer. I believe the original circuit calls for a 250k.

The difficult part to find is the reverse-log 1M for the bass cut. I got one directly from G&L; the most expensive but easiest option.

I used the standard G&L wiring diagram. The added switch went between the .1uF OMG cap and ground.

I posted this a while back, and I'll leave my frustration with this kit from Pitbull, but it's a work in progress, getting closer to being a playable 5 string fretless. More to come, but we did a simple spray can finish that shined up well, but it far less than perfect. I should have also noted that the headstock will match. I opted for a somewhat less-than original type of colr, but I got the color I was hoping for!

My workbench is a bit unfocused at the moment. I just finished turning this Christmas Ornament -

The ball element is quilted maple that (supposedly) came out of the Gibson factory. The story was that they kicked it due to "not enough quilt". I'm not sure what the finials are, it was random wood I got for free. It had a "TB" on the end of it, but I have no idea what that means. The previous owner had passed away, and he did not leave his decoder ring.
Anyways, long story longer; this one is getting shipped to a YouTube maker that asked for ornaments for their tree that will sit behind them during their podcasts each Tuesday. I need to get a letter in the box and get it shipped.

Aside from that, I've got two cutting boards on my bench that gave me fits last night. I sent them through my janky ancient Makita lunchbox planer to flatten them out after the glue-up and one of them got a ton of snipe at one end. So now I gotta figure out how best to flatten it without removing too much material, and it's about 1/2" thinner than I really wanted it. And these are supposed to be a matching pair, so now the other one needs thinned down to match even though it doesn't have that problem. I noticed the snipe after the first pass, so I flipped it around and sent it back through and it sniped again, even deeper. So my attempt to fix it only made it worse. So now I'm angry, frustrated and annoyed. :meh:
I may throw together a router sled to flatten it instead, but these things are 12" wide so it'll take a pretty big sled and I have concerns about how to do the arms holding the router over a span that wide without too much flex or droop.

I'd love to get al this done so I can get back to that guitar build! :thumbsdown:
