When tattoos make you look ridiculous

Your intentions are very unclear. From down here looking up at you, it seems the way I called it. When someone has a slogan of "bigger than Jesus", it's not a stretch to see it the way I do.
OTOH it could just be indicating that I really like the Simpsons. Check out my avatar.
I have my entire back, both upper arms and one forearm tattooed. I am employed as a Product Designer. I keep my tattoos covered when necessary by wearing a long sleeve dress shirt. One of my duties is to conduct product design presentations and design reviews with our customers. I've been to countless high level corporate meetings across the USA and Mexico and since I keep the tats covered when necessary, I've never had a problem. As a matter of fact when I came to this company (11) years ago nobody in the office ever knew I had any tattoos until about (3) years later.
I do advise to refrain from getting tattoos on your hands, head, neck, etc., or anywhere else where they cannot be easily covered as you could have problems down the road otherwise.

Its a terrible point because its not what Munji said at all. What happened to reading skills these days?
It's a good point because Munji has made some really silly assumptions and come to conclusions based on stereotypes and associations. Thehurlatron offered more examples of associations that point out how wrong these conclusions can be.
I'm in that position. I hold a high level job in a software company. I kind of "grew up" with the company and now help run it. When I'm sitting across the table from potential customers, negotiating multi-million dollar deals, I have to make absolutely sure that my tats don't show. It sucks to have to wear long sleeve shirts ALL the time, even in 100+ degree heat in Alabame in the summer. But, I like my tats, and don't regret any of them.

Yeah I'm starting to get pissed off at people who think something is wrong/dumb/a bad decision/stupid ONLY because they don't understand it. It's very ignorant to say that everyone will regret face/hand/neck tattoos. Just because you believe you would regret it, and idiots who have gotten them have regretted it, does not mean everyone does or will. This goes with ABSOLUTELY everything in life, and it's really pissing me off when people run their mouths about topics they have no experience about, I had a rough few days seeing it over many topics and realize it happens way too much. Stop being ignorant. I don't have face/neck/hand tattoos and don't think I ever will, it wouldn't suit me or who I want to portray myself as, but I will not say that it's a bad idea for everyone.
Let's distill what I have said.
1. There is social prejudice toward tattoos.
2. Tattoos make it more difficult to get and keep worthwhile employment.
3. Almost all prisoners, bikers, gang bangers, prostitutes and strippers have tattoos, and if you have tattoos you share that in common with them.
4. As an employer, I have hired people with tattoos, and they remain employed. One of them is a regional manager, and was just made a shareholder in the company.
So I'm going to stick by those comments. I did NOT say all people with tattoos are low lifes or scumbags. Some are (see above list).
So, for the record, since I don't think I explicitly stated it, I do have some level of prejudice toward tattooed people. That should come as a huge surprise to everyone. But I am able to suppress my prejudice when it comes to employment because I want to get the best people for the job. Almost none of those have tattoos, but if they did, they'd still get the job if they were the most qualified, and if I believed that their tattoos would not gross out our clients.
If there is a need to go on a forum and discuss the ups and downs of getting a tattoo before you make the plunge, I'd say you are not a good candidate for a tattoo.
OK, I havn't read through all of this, so I will almost definitely say something that has been said before. Please forgive me. But what's going on guys? cmon, you're starting to get more and more personal about this issue. Tattoos are, for many people, a way to commemorate significant events in people's lives. Who are we to judge someone who says that they are proud of their ink? That said, I take real issue with people who get tattoos just for the sake of getting tattoos. Just a really stupid thing to do, and the number one reason that people regret their ink.
For example, my mate's cousin has his brother's picture inked on his side, with the words "Always by my side" underneath it. His brother died of cancer. Too me, that is a fantastic reason to get tattooed.
Looking at it from a different angle, my uncle decided to get a tattoo when he turned 18. He got his girlfriends name tattooed on him. She dumped him because of it. Stupid thing to do. But my point remains, debate the topic, don't tell someone that he has crap tattoos, because you don't know the story behind it

For 1. and 2. I think I'd have to say "it depends"...
For 3. I think tatoos are now so ubiquitous the comparison is almost moot.
Maybe it's just different up here in the north.
Like all debates here on TB, it's all a question of degree and, ultimately, personal desire and taste.
