Where can I get an easy to use HPF...

Just curious - why would you set it higher than the minimum fundamental frequency of the lowest note on your bass? Because the acoustics or the room or signal chain (amp/speakers) are over-emphasizing and amplifying the lower frequencies? Thanks
Some of those frequencies sound better not there. True that rooms can resonate and make you raise the filter to catch it but cutting out sub 60hz is routine for me and likely what @40Hz could be doing. Rumbly junk does nothing for me but a strong 60hz gives a nice low B.
 
I have the HPF+LPF unit. Looks like he has to make more! I'd imagine that the micro HPF with the bypass switch is more or less the same circuit in the HPF+LPF for less money. Honestly, I didnt realize how important a LPF can be for bass tone as well.

I replaced the fDeck HPF 3 that is also a great option, but a bit more limited in its function and the design was not as pedalboard friendly.
Does that mean you can use both LPF and HPF at the same time?.
 
So is the LPF just for people who are too lazy enough to reach around the back of the cabinet and turn down the tweeter? Or for people who insist on playing their amps "flat" ...? ;-)

I'm curious why the OP thinks the built-in EQ controls on their Genzler amp aren't enough to get them where they want to be? Don't most Genzler amps already have an HPF that the engineers worked to get right?

One reason not already mentioned is it’s unlikely your average cab can reproduce frequencies down that low. Most drop off rapidly at a frequency well above the 40Hz fundamental. So even if you don’t cut those frequencies out, they’re not going to make it out of your cab anyway. And that stresses drivers and your amp.

So removing useless lows makes your signal sound cleaner and takes some of the load off your amp.

I suppose combining the 2 stand alone units available there would do the same thing, only taking up more pedalboard space.

If incorporated into a preamp it makes sense to have both right there. As outboard devices you may want to keep them separate for various reasons.

But it all depends on what your goals are. I prefer having the flexibility of separate devices. But the question then becomes: What do you need that extra flexibility for? So like everything else with bass, it’s a different situation for every player.
 
Yeah, I'm not knocking it too hard. I'm glad these items are out there and available. I wrote earlier that I might have gone their direction if I had known about them, but knowing that I got my always-on Broughton for $90 makes me think I made a wiser choice after all.

You buy what you know about and what’s available. I bought my Broughton HPF before tge always-on version became available. For hiw and what I use it fir the smaller always-on version would have been an arguably wiser choice. But so it goes. :laugh:

I just replaced an amp with a new one that has less knobs, bells and whistles. So much happier with sound or is it I happier because I have less to choose from and just play? Seriously though, I think having the separate units would allow the LPF to be placed after a squealing
, noisy , hi gain pedal with good effect (sorry) if that’s what a LPF it can be used for. And have the HPF at the beginning or the end of the signal to tighten the bottom.

can't I do the same thing with my EQ?

HPF *is* a type of EQ. ;)

So if your EQ includes an HPF then yes, you can do the same thing with your EQ and don't need an HPF (because you already have HPF EQ).

If you're not sure whether or not your EQ includes an HPF, let us know the brand and model, and one of us probably knows the answer. :)

If you don't want those freqs at FOH you need to attenuate them before your DI pedal....

I don't know about you, but my bass signal doesn't have THAT much power down around that area.
If you cut them off with a steep filter, that filter will just distort the signal at the knee anyway. That's right at the low E/D# point on a bass guitar. In fact, you could probably get the same result by rebalancing your pickups. I have never seen a E or D# stress bass speakers.

Most bass amplifier EQs are shelving at the very bottom and very top. So if you dial back the bass and boost the low-mids slightly, you're doing essentially the same thing, but giving more signal to the preamp at the input to work with.

I think a better option is to let the engineers work it out and have something between the preamp and the power-amp. I don't see a point of feeding a thinner signal to the input of most amps, especially ones which use all of the available sound to create some character.

By your logic I could argue "So are volume knobs just for people who are too lazy to put their ear closer to the cabinet so they can hear themselves better?" ;)

HPF and LPF are nothing more (or less) than a specific type of EQ, for people who want or need to shape their tone in that specific way. It has nothing to do with "laziness" and everything to do with achieving the sound in your head. Some people like 31-band graphic EQ, some people like parametric EQ, some people like traditional bass/mid/treble, some people don't use any EQ at all... and some people like HPF or LPF.

What I personally like about HPF and LPF is that it has a "cutting the crust off the bread" or "trimming the fat from the meat" sound that is difficult to achieve with other types of EQ.

I just use a HPF. So far I haven’t found anything I need a LPF for. So I’ll hold of getting one until/unless I do.

Your logic about putting ones ears to the cabinet doesn't actually work, because bass wavelengths are too long to make that work. Try standing next to a W bin sub with it cranked, and it will be mostly tolerable. Stand back 50 feet and you'll likely feel like puking.

I know what they are. That's my point They're another OP-Amp in the chain, adding more noise to the input side (which is already relatively high gain) when you could just dial out what you want on the EQ on the amp. Some are fixed, others are parametric. I get that. But you don't need a 31 band EQ to do it. Most amps now have a well-placed bass shelving control.

So if the HPF does exactly the same thing as a bass cut on an amp, is that amp not capable of "cutting the crust off of bread" without it? Your crust-of-bread metaphor doesn't work either.
