Where can I get an easy to use HPF...

yes stum, I just looked, thank you for that, makes sense. And the real world results are good? I mean, it actually works in real life? If so, that's great! I might buy one
Best piece of kit I've added to my rig. Would have been way handy back in the day. Turn it up until the tone thins out and then back off a bit or even a bit more. :thumbsup:

The louder you play the more it works.

Guys... from my understanding a HPF or even LPF are not the same things as a tone control section. Just a basic fact. They don't operate the same way.

HPFs and LPFs effectively act on the output section of the amp. not the front end preamp section like tone controls (whatever kind they may be).

At least that is my understanding. (Remember the days of Bi Amp Rigs???)

They work kind of like an digital active crossover, and either stop or allow certain frequencies into the power amp section. Just saying.

You might be right. My understanding however is the opposite, that HPF is just a type of EQ. Theoretically you should be able to take a previously HPF'd signal, apply the opposite EQ curve, and set it back to flat. :)

H/LPFs eq after wherever they are in the signal chain.

If you take a look at the eq graphs in my HPF LPF TB Wiki, you'll see what the difference is in how they work.

Oh I understand the graphs :) I'm just saying, conceptually, HPF falls into the "EQ" category, no? You've got graphic, shelving, parametric, semi-parametric, low-pass, high-pass, band-path, etc. and the commonality is that they all boost or cut certain frequencies according to a particular slope or curve.
 
It's not some sort of magic circuit. In the old days we high-passed with parametric EQs. It's just another tool with a specific purpose.

At the same time lots of audio tech has HPF to prevent extremely low frequencies (below 10Hz) from getting through some circuitry.

Digital audio always has a low-pass filter in place to prevent aliasing artifacts from grunging up the audio post-conversion. A tonne of engineering research has gone into those LPFs and how they react to the signal. A simple slope isn't always enough.

Another type of EQ that will be familiar to hipsters and anyone over 40 is the "RIAA equalization" used for vinyl records.

When the recording is mastered, an HPF is applied (mathematically it's a little more complex than a simple HPF, you see by the graph it's not a completely straight line, but let's call it that for clarity) to cut the low frequencies. This allows the record to be pressed with shallower grooves so the needle doesn't jump out, and it also improves the signal to noise of the high frequency content compared to the crackle of the vinyl medium.

Then when the consumer plays back the record, their phono preamp applies a LPF that is the mirror image of the HPF used for mastering. The two curves cancel out, and the listener hears the music with flat response. If you try to play back the record on the wrong equipment, that doesn't have the RIAA EQ, then it will sound very tinny.



I guess my point is, HPF's and LPF's aren't magic. They are common EQ circuits that anyone might have in their living room. And of course they are commonly found on pro audio equipment like preamps or mixing consoles. The only thing that is "new and exciting" about this discussion is that now we, as bassists, have the luxury of affordable HPF and LPF pedals on our pedalboards. :)

Yes, the RIAA curve is applied at the point where the master is played to the lathe - not on the tape or the digital copy.

Mastering to Vinyl is a real art, or a world of horror and hate depending on how you look at it.

Although, it's still not flat, even after the RIAA curve is undone - it's just better than if it hadn't been there at all. There were even other curves for a time but the RIAA curve became the standard.

so using the 30 and 64 slidrs on the eq is not the same as an hpf?

I've posted this modeled comparison a few times over the years. It's been a while, but I think the graphic EQ curve was for something like a simple stompbox 10 band EQ with the 30Hz band pulled full down. The HPF curve is from one of my DIY amp builds, all of which have somehat different responce curves: High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread
 
I can certainly provide a dissenting opinion, especially for an amp with a baked in HPF. Not everyone believes in them and telling people who don't to go away is unproductive.

I still maintain he likely doesn't need it, and like many have said, some bass cabinets act like a passive HPF anyway, so there's that too.

The title of this thread is "Where can I get an easy to use HPF". The title of the thread is not "Do I need HPF".

Suggesting (repeatedly) that the OP doesn't need HPF is trolling.
