on the side, so when someone "accidentally" step on my cable, the cable unplug without forcing and tearing the jack...

I changed the jack a couple of time on my jazz bass and never on my other basses with the jack on the side...

for jack daniel, i prefer it straight, and on rare time half/half with seven-up: taste a bit like canada dry soft drink... lol But generally I prefer scotch and bourbon straight... :) mmmhhhhh.... slurp...

I prefer the jack on the front, like on a P bass. I thought the strat style input was silly, until I bought my Fender Steve Bailey. It makes perfect sense once you've gotten used to the idea. I do a lot of studio work and teaching. Stuff that I usually sit down for most of the time. The strat style jack is perfect for what I do with the 6 string fretless. For me, IMO, and stuff.

I prefer mine on the side. I use an angled plug and put the cable between the strap and body of the bass. My P Deluxe has a nice metal plate around the jack so I have no issues with scratching or plugging in quickly....run a finger down to the jack to locate the hole, slip the plug in and I'm ready. This literally takes half a second more then if it was in the front. Some people make it sound like it takes 15 minutes of sound check to find the jack. Hopefully you have better luck with your girlfriends.:D
As far as it getting in the way on a guitar stand....I put mine on a hanging stand. Too many issues with the cord getting yanked on both front and side jacks to ever go back to a regular old guitar stand.
