I put the minimum. I don't see the need to give out tons of information about myself on a public forum. There's already plenty of info for anyone trolling the net to find about me if they look very hard. Anyone who reads through my posts is going to get to know a lot more relevant info about me than they would read in the basic info profile section. Does it really matter if the recommendations people give me are age/gender/brand appropriate? Not really. If I solicit help/opinions/support/gripes from the community, I either take what the community gives me or I buzz off. There's not a lot to be gained by railing against the old-timers who think things have to be their way or the highway, and, by the way, get off my lawn!
I think of it like a discussion at a party where you really don't know most people. Do you suddenly walk up to a group discussion and announce who you are like it's a speed dating event? "I'm Joe! I'm 27, like punk and will only ever play vintage tube gear that I refuse to maintain because I'm sticking it to the man! I also hate my pop-punk singer and my drummer can't keep time." Or do you sidle up to the group and comment on their current topic and maybe shift the discussion or bring up a new topic when the opportunity presents itself? Basically letting people get to know you by the concepts and preferences you express rather than blurting out a summary of your likes, dislikes and how so and so would be your soulmate if only they were born ten years later and would take the time to get to know you. I think you can guess which side of that line I fall on.
- Not Joe. Also: not 27, not into punk and dislike vintage gear and lack of basic maintenance.

TL;DR --- while there are good reasons not to share some things on your information page, why not share enough to be helpful to others who may want to be helpful to you, or to give advice to you!?


POV: when i actually joined the TB party = i didn't know any better so i filled out my information page with what i thought was enough info to get me going. (i don't think i've changed anything since then --- maybe i should?)

i didn't look at other's information pages (i mean: "why?") until i began to realize that knowing at least a little bit about the OP/poster could be helpful in giving a response (context). also: some of us have avatars/info present every time we post, while others 'reveal' nothing about themselves except what can be gleaned from a posting (often difficult, sometimes impossible). i don't think i/we need a lot of info: just the basics!
e.g.
- gender
- general location (country, part of the country)
- age or age group
- music: general experience, if any
- music we like/play

not knowing anything about another member can make it difficult to:
- give age/gender-appropriate feedback
- give location-appropriate feedback
- empathize
- care
- other reasons: explain your own!

FWIW: i've mentioned this 'issue' in a couple of threads and others have occasionally posted similar thoughts re: the lack of info on a member's information page! i'm curious about the reasons why some folks don't share some info/context.

On a public forum, here or anywhere else, I share only the information necessary to a post. You all should consider yourselves mushrooms. I don't feel a great need to put myself out all over the internet. Like not having facebook, twitter or instagram.
