Who's got Halo 2?

She found out Halo2 came out, & tried to buy a copy... She was told no, you had to pre-order it... So, she ran over to Best Buy, walked up to a kid working there & said, "Hi, I'm here to pick up my pre-ordered copy of Halo 2". The kid hands it to her, & says, Here ya go!....

Tadaaaa, we've got Halo2!!!!

Part of me says, "Hey, awesome for you, buddy!"

The other part of me says that now because of you, someone who preordered the game is now :bawl:.

Well, I've been playing for the last 5 days (the reason that I have been away for so long) and I can say that I'm not impressed. Yeah, the graphics are way cool. And the story line is pretty cool. But the game doesn't seem to have the fluidity of HALO 1. You go from space station to earth to covanent ship in just three levels. Orginal HALO had a small story line, but it was all connected. This seems disjointed.

The new weapons are cool, but they changed how things sound!! The plasma rifle, pistol, needler, and even the fusion cannon all sound different and even operate differently. Was there a huge time gap that I missed? A lot of my play is done on Surround sound, and I could tell by the sound if the attack to my left was something I could take or needed to dodge. Now I have to learn a whole new round of sounds, and it's getting me confused.

I also don't like how they changed the vehicles. The warthog is much harder to drive now, cause you can't swing the back end around. I used to be able to run people over left and right by doing these cool side-to-side swings, but you can't do that now. Yes, I know that there is a powerslide feature, but that isn't the same, and it slows you down.

My rating for this is :):)Meh+. Not great, and I kinda thing I was ripped of at $50, but I'll keep it and finish the game.

Rock on
Eric

We all look for different things from a game (obviously). Here's what I like: more weapons, better weapon balance (porcupine gun is so much cooler, pistol no longer ridiculously overpowered), fantastic level designs that practically force you to use different strategies, new vehicles, vehicle jacking, vehicle-vehicle combat, less loading time between levels (happens in the background during the cinematics)......

That's just for starters, and I haven't even touched on the multiplayer improvements for system link and Xbox live.

Wanna see something cool? Click on one of the games to see how far you can drill down into my Xbox Live stats at bungie.net (yes I suck, I've won only 1 out of 18 games):

Wow, I never thought I'd say this, but I actually agree that in summation, the experience is.....okay. I don't think this stuff counts as "spoilers" because it's stuff you notice from the start.

1.) The two-handed thing doesn't do it for me, and here's why. First, it's unwieldy--I hate having to go through a series of button pushes when the gun I want to keep is in my left hand. Second, it takes grenades out play, which--to me--were a HUGE part of Halo 1 tactics. Third, many of the enemies are so much tougher in Halo 2, you can't hope to kill them with a single pistol, essentially mandating that if you are going to have a sidearm equipped, you HAVE to have two or you WILL die.

2.) I don't think the variety of weapons is an improvement. In the first game, the limited number of weapons was part of the fun (e.g. if the other guy had a shotgun, you got a stand off weapon, etc) I mean the pistol and the energy pistol are now completely neutered--you can't kill anything with either. If you wait all day to charge a plasma pistol power shot, the things don't home in worth a damn. What's up with that?

As far as I can tell, the only human weapons worth having are the rocket launcher, shotgun, and sniper rifle. All the others suck--the pistol is pure ass, the semi's have dubious stopping power and are slow to reload, the new assault rifle is also lame. :spit:

The new covenant weapons are better--the plasma sniper rifle, the fuel rod cannon I can live with. I think the one-hit kill sword is overrated because you get so few kills with it. The carbine seems to suffer the same problem that the human assault rifle does--too little ammo.

In fact I have to say that overall, you don't seem to get nearly as far with one weapon in this game as you did in the original and that's a shame. There's simply no reason why it should take two head shots to kill those armored grunts.

I dunno, I'm coming off negative and I don't mean to, because overall the game is a net positive. I like the new art, though many of the levels were too dark. The vehicle rides got a little boring at times. The story tended to skip around a bit more than I would have liked, but there's no way around that I suppose. The main criticism I have is that the new controls detract a little from the magic of the original. We bassists know that less is more.

Well, off to the real reason we all bought this bad boy in the first place--online play. See you in the ring.

My thoughts exactly, though I do think that the new rifle CAN be quite useful, expecially with the scope on it now. It actually acts like a rifle, not what amounts to a sub machinegun.

I aldo dont like the fact that in dual weld you have limited vision. You miss about 1/4 of your field of view carrying 2 guns. It was the same thing with the rocket launcher, I never carried it farther than I had to.

I also don't like what they did to the wraiths. I won't say exactly what they did to keep from being a spoiler, but the new additions were NOT in the old version, and the timeline for this game did NOT allow for that kind of innovation so quickly.

I do like the new "board craft" feature, but I'm having trouble getting used to it. I'm so used to ducking AWAY from incoming vehicles that it feels funny to wait fot it to get close.

Rock on

Fair points, not gratuitous negativity!

My take: it makes sense not to be able to dual-wield and toss grenades. First because of the realism factor (2 arms), second because of gameplay balance (esp. multiplayer).

It was cool experimenting with weapons combos. Early n the game I enjoyed dual-wielding a pair of plasma guns. It's very cool that the game will allow you to replace one of the energy guns if you find another with more energy... true even for dual wielding. In another level I used a pair of needlers. For multiplayer, dual-wielding is a natural... the SMG/magnum combo seemed to work surprisingly well. But the bottom line is that multiplayer freeforalls are so fast that grenades are mostly a pure luck factor anyway.

As for other weapons: give me the shotgun against the flood. Aside from that, depends on what range I'm fighting. I absolutely love the energy sword in close quarters. The battle rifle is so much better this time around because of the zoom... it's decent at close range and can even be used to snipe. I agree the Covenant rifle isn't much to speak of, and the plasma pistol is pretty much only useful in your left hand. A single SMG is lame, but two are cool because each one holds so much ammo... the only trick is not to reload both at once.

As for stopping/killing power: I think you're playing on Heroic, and from what I've read Heroic level is much harder this time around.

Beat it in three days on heroic. Cant get anywhere on legendary. Im getting whopped all over the place. Have any of you been able to get anywhere playing solo on legendary?
One reviewer said that Halo2 heroic was close to Halo1 legendary, and Halo2 legendary is just ridiculous. Apparently that is the case, so don't feel bad!

I haven't even tried Legendary... probably won't bother.
:hiding:

BTW, I do have complaints. Both friendly and enemy AI can hiccup: I've seen a marine or two get stuck in a corner; sometimes when replaying a checkpoint some enemies will stay in place and do nothing. Storyline isn't what it was 1st time, and as noted the ending is feh.

But overall I'm satisfied, maybe because I took all the hype with a grain of salt. Halo already pushed the limits of the Xbox; no way Halo2 was going to blow it away.

Oh, here's a nice thing I haven't mentioned: no more medpacks! It's very cool that the shield regenerates faster.

Word, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt oddly confined with two guns. Strange. My other point is that dual wield is kind of like a "great homogenizer" because the second weapon offsets any inherent weakness in the first. Dig? So everybody's basically got the same stopping power now, regardless of what they dual wield. Just some combos are better for in close.

Anyway, the other thing I wish was different was the ratio of available weapons. In heroic, there are about fifty plasma pistols available to every one of anything else. How about some ammo for that dang human carbine? I can only kill about six covenant when burning a full load of ammo.

Dual Magnums = Killing power like you wouldnt believe. Sure, it doesnt carry much ammo, but nothing short of the sword/shotty can stop it at close range. Just rip on the triggers.

As for the annoying combo of buttons to change right-hand guns while dual-wielding, all you have to do is press x.... not hard at all, and certainly not annoying.

Personally, I like the weapons sooo much more, and guns like the sentinel beamer are awesome if you know how to use them.
