Cliff Burton!!When I first heard For whom the bell tolls I couldnt believe the intro was played on bass.
Mr. Entwistle by far, but I think Lee and Squier tie a close second.
Oh, and for pure skill (you never know about the other ones because you never see em noodle) but this is the best bassist I've ever seen. Youtube and all (I know the guy personally).

I like three players in particular, Rick Danko from the Band, Leon Wilkeson from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Paul McCartney.
I like each of their styles very much.

As far as making me want to play the instrument, Jason Newsted. His live shows and furious down-picking made the instrument look so much cooler than guitar or drums.
But at the moment, I have to say that Ryan Martinie is and probably always will be my favourite bass player. I love mudvayne and his bass lines are something totally different as far as heavy metal goes. He has all the speed of harris, but genuine maturity, skill and creativity as well as a wide variety of different playing styles. When I first saw him play, my jaw hit the ground. Since then I have aspired to be as good as him and have adopted some of his techniques into my playing, but I am not trying to be his clone.

"Never There" was one of the first songs I heard along with "sheep go to heaven and goats go to hell" YEAH, THERE'S NO WAY YOU CAN TURN THEM DOWN!
I saw theme in Chicago a few years ago, great show too! I didn't know they were touring at all right now!
