Why do so many drummers wear Kangol Hats????

For clarity's sake, are you talking about Kangol brand hats or paperboy/newsboy/cabbie hats (the style of hat)?

when I hear Kangol, I think LLcoolJ, RunDMC .... and can't recall ever seeing a drummer wear one, of those. cabby hats sure.

Kangol were British WW11 beret makers!! So maybe all drummers think they are Feild Marshall Montgomery! (I wondered for a long time why all these americans on telly were wearing little wallabies, thought they might have been closet aussie rugby fans!)

Exactly. Most that wear them are follically challenged.

Im talking about "newsboy" style caps in general. Kangol just seemed easier and is the most common brand amongst skin bangers, it seems. I may amend the discussion to include pork pie hats too as well, as they also seem to be a drummer favorite.

Maybe its because drummers are the sweatiest member of the band, and the hat helps keep the sweat from running down their face.

This. I've been drumming for 30 years this fall and ever since my late 20's I wear a hat when playing. Kinda coincidental with hair loss yes, but I don't usually wear a hat when playing bass. A fellow band member who played in a band I played drums with for a while ended up coming over and playing guitar for a band I play bass in, and he said he was surprised to see I didn't wear my hat. He had assumed I wore it because I'm embarrassed of being bald, but although that may be partially true D) it's all about the sopping up of gallons of nasty bald head sweat in a show. Drumming's a serious workout...I wear wristbands too...

The only guy in our church band who wears a hat on stage wears one--he's a bass player (not me BTW).

Based on the responses in this thread, it is possible that bass players are as likely to wear such a hat as drummers.

Well Hell's bells. I have two of those that I rotate when playing gigs.

I always called em "andy cap hats".
I dont wear one, but a friend of mine thats a drummer wears one..but hes older, so maybe thats why?..

I dont wear a hat,just for fashion .. just cuz I think that it makes people look like theyre tryin too hard.
Remember the olden days ?.. when EVERYONE wore a hat? back then people would look outa place if they didnt wear a hat.

If I wore a hat onstage for a full show I'd melt, plus I'd need to duct tape it to my head. I've never gotten through more than one song with any hat.

I'm a drummer, I'm numb to the jokes, so no worries. I sweat so much when I drum it's truly embarrassing. A hat would help, but I would just ruin the hat. Those large industrial fans work wonders though.

I'm a drummer, a bald drummer and I hate hats.

But I'll wear one if my head is cold in the winter, or if I have a long outdoor gig and I don't want to get my head sunburned.

As for that style of hat, I have a grey wool one that I wear in the winter. It's not about style for me, it's about protecting my shiny head.

For the record, my sweetie likes to see me in hats, and keeping her happy is important as well.

Thanks for the warning! Just kidding! Fellow skin basher here. Been a drummer much longer than I've been a bassist. For the record, I'm not a fan of hats.

So many times its hard to even see the drummers face.

But a cabbie hat makes even less sense then. Your average drummer's sweaty bald spot shines with the power of a thousand under stage lighting. Maybe the kangol is an attempt to hide?

Hey, I resemble that remark! 30+ years on drums/percussion and other stuff and 14 on bass now. I do tell people that I am a recovering drummer - still find myself tappling out rhythms with drum sounds in my head.

I rarely wear hats. Mostly just for sun protection. My celtic band did wear those kind of hats for some promo pictures.
