The seed of this discussion comes down to dads versus non-dads. There's dad basses and then there's non dad basses. Now granted Ibanez has made plenty of dad basses (a lot mentioned in this very thread). Overall though, their claim to fame has been the anti-dad bass, the SR. A bass that stripped away all the old silliness with pick guards, bulky bodies, and other vintage styling for a smooth and fast playability machine.
Interesting. As a dad bassist, I feel like it’s the opposite. The good ol SR — a 25 year old 1980’s design is practical and light. The white sneakers of the bass world. If dad knows Tang Soo Do or is a low key baller on the court, the sneakers will perform great, but won’t score coolness points.

If dad wants to pose with his P Bass with torts in front of a hip looking brick wall or something, he can look the part. Or buy a Harley. That’s classic cool and maybe has a chance of appearing more “Daddy” than “Dad” to the ladies in the audience.

But it still comes down to the playing. Can the dude sink threes? How is his spinning back kick?

That matters more than the bass. A good Fender and a good Ibanez are both good instruments.

Lol..I agree.. is Dad bassist,Dad guitarist the new cool thing to say?
I'm a Dad of two and I play a modern 5 string, 35" scale active bass. Sometimes I play a P or jazz too..
I don't want a Harley or a convertible sportscar.
I do train in kickboxing and BJJ..
Different people like different things regardless of age. To think overwise comes off as ignorant.
Cheers!

they're super popular. i'd say a strong 30% of my students have ibanez gear.

in fact, that's probably the gear I see the most with my students. only a few of them have fenders, couple epiphones, yamaha, taylor, and so on.

they make high quality stuff. the look, feel, sound, may or may not "do it" for you, but i'm a picky maniac with QC and rarely do i see problems on ibanez stuff. especially when you consider the scale of their operation, maintaining good QC is even more impressive.

I wonder if that is simply due to the fact that 6-string bassists are still somewhat of a rare breed and/or there aren't enough brave souls willing to take that leap. I've seen a fair few Cadillac 6ers in the classifieds at Chevy prices for that reason. If I were still a 6-string player I'd have pick of the litter. But despite having spent years on 5 and 6-strings, I'm veering back home to 4s.
Could be. I've gone back and forth on six, but have never become completely comfortable on it. I may just keep it and keep on working on it. I was the same way with 5s but am now very comfortable on my 5-string. Still and all, the 4-string (upright and BG) always feels like "home."

I have a lot of respect for Ibanez instruments. Each time I have been in the position to buy a decent bass (not that often!) an Ibanez bass has been a top contender. I don't own any Ibanez basses, but I have two Ibanez guitars (Gretsch style hollow body electrics) both of which are excellent.

I don't own any Ibanez basses myself, but having played a few in music shops over the years I would have no issues buying one if the price and timing was right for me. I never perceived any lack of enthusiasm for their instruments among musicians I know.

why is an Ibanez bass guitar not a very popular bass.....I have 5 out of 30 bass guitars.....I love the sounds......But when I read up on bass players out of the masses only a few play Ibanez......I was just wondering why that is???????They look and sound great to me.......
Ibanez bass not popular? Not my experience - they're all over the place. Stage, studio and basement. They make a wickedly fine bass and are very innovative. You need to get out more! ;):)

My 1st 5 string was an Ibanez SRT805DX. Very cool bass. Had a body shape like a Spector with the concave front and back and Neck thru. Played great and sounded good. I grew tired of the preamp and pickups in it and moved it after a couple years. Wish I would have just swapped the electronics out. Hard to find anymore.
