Why so many fat bass players?

Just came across this thread and found it funny because i've always associated bass with the long thin lanky dude (or dudette) with long fingers. It certainly appears to be that way here in Australia with most of the bass players I know and have seen around being, as it is sometimes known here as, a "long tall streak of pelican poopie!"

In saying that, one of my favorite bass player friends is a little rounder than average, and female.

I've taken to wearing a padded strap around my waist/top of hip to fatten me up....it holds the bass in a nice, tilted position which makes it easier to play. Chunky guys always make playing look effortless too; maybe cuz they're half in a food coma at any given time? But seriously...go back to fifth grade band....who gets assigned the big instruments.... the biggest kid in the room. The bass is a physically challenging instrument so proportionally more big people start/continue playing? Now I'm hungry.

Good question, Joe. Of course it's very unhealthy to be overweight and I imagine all of these overweight bass players are diabetic with bad cholesterol, etc, and require daily medication. I would not live like that. I work out three times per week and eat right. I'm 170 and 6 feet tall -- have been for the past 12 years. I'm 40 years old, btw.

Good for you. Now back on Earth where I live, it doesn't happen that way.

I'm going to assume you are unwilling to admit that you dramatically overshot in your first post.

Sensitive, offended? Nah. As I said, I'm not typically considered "fat". I have some extra weight I want to shed, but my height pretty much hides it. Furthermore, I think any sensible person acknowledges that, on average, carrying a lot of extra weight can lead to health issues--I found it strange that you jumped to the conclusion that I was arguing otherwise. And I found the hyperbolic assumption that all fat people already have this issue and that and the other to be out of line, so I'm glad you finally apologized for that.[/Qyour a joke

I used to be fat I took my weight off its not so easy for other people I guess... does it really matter? if someone that is obese and can play better then you? Get over yourself bro

I use to be fat and I'm still fat. So is our guitarist and drummer. The keyboard/sax player is within limits.

I always think of an of example of unintended consequences with a little story about one of my bosses at the company I retired from. He ate healthy, walked every morning before work. Walked every evening after work. Worked out at the gym a couple of times a week. Dropped dead from a massive coronary at age 42.

Balding + Tall + Fat = Me. My fattassery and head-shinyness inform my tone.

I don't know about anyone else (yes, I do), but I wonder why more bass players aren't fat dudes (no, I don't). What do those skinny jerks bring to the table anyway (besides musicianship, creativity, good eating habits and/or rounds of drinks)? Jaco was too skinny (not caused at all by melting into a pile of drugs) to be a real bass player (ha).

Seriously??? I think it's time for the administrators to open a separate category for dumb, silly, stupid, what color is best...what color shoestrings, etc. questions!
I enjoy the builds, NAD, NBD, technical stuff from the engineers, reviews, pics of your gear and performances, singer babes...but come on gentlemen....yer giving bass players a bad rep with some of these questions!
