Why so many fat bass players?

Man, all this experience and nobody's hit on the real reason yet. Its the cost of strings. Lotsa guitar players are thin because they can eat properly; their strings are like $6 a set. Bass strings retail in the $40-$50 range (if you're paying that you're doing it wrong!) so we have to eat cheap food out of boxes to save money. That's right; we do it because we're dedicated to the art. Obviously skinny guitarists aren't.

Bass players are definitely a different breed. I forgot where I heard or saw it, but I recall a girl asking another person at a bar who a certain person is. The reply was, that guy over there. The one that looks like a bass player. I can always pick out the bass player in a photo of a band without their instruments. They just have that look.

Thread is 4 years old. I would never say such a thing today. I've grown up a bit :whistle:.

As I said a bunch of years ago, it was a bit tongue in cheek. Was just playing around with some stereotypes. I do still think there's more fat famous bass players than there are fat guys on other instruments. Not a judgement, but an observation I made, that may or may not be valid. The black thing and the girl thing were just stupid but gave us all a bit more to talk about :). My apologies if I offended anyone, it really wasn't my intent.

Being in shape is better than being out of shape. If you are in shape you will no doubt be a better performer as performing long gigs takes physical stamina. So does lifting heavy gear. Just sayin'.

It is funny how people have a stereotype about how a bass player is supposed to look. I am on the thin side and people have actually said to me 'you don't look like a bass player.' I think looks have become more important in popular music now than many years ago - I think it was easier to look different (I won't say ugly but just out of the norm in some way) years ago and still become 'big' in music - less likely to happen today imo. I think outside of singers, in the 'classic' era, you had a lot of players in big bands who were not conventionally attractive. Less likely to happen today. Heck, even the punk rockers now are cute - unheard of in the 70s - just kidding :) What does that say about our society?
