I just watched that yesterday and it prompted me to bring my DIY Warmoth fretless J out of stroage...This one...
I haven't been able to play it since I had a minor stroke 5 years ago, it's just beyond my ability now so i decided to rebuild it as a shortscale fretted using an SX neck that fits the neck pocket very well.
I also have a CNZ shortscale J bass that I play.
So, the useful manipulation of an electrical circuit characteristic works magic for bass players and has guitarists pulling their hair out for a solution.

As for the topic of trying to tell the difference in a Jazz in neck pickup only mode vs a PBass; the Jazz is the one with 60 Hz hum between the notes
As for Scott & his YouTube channel, some videos are entertaining & some are boring. The Crusher Jazz video was one of the better ones.
And also; don’t be offended when someone mentions Scott’s glove; he embraces being the white glove bassist on the internet, and it obviously doesn’t prevent him from being an awesome player.

Nah, Gibson Victory bass crushes everything. A buddy of mine had one and called it the "ten ton bass" because that thing was a cinderblock. I could clobber you on the head with that Victory bass like a Looney Tunes cartoon and it would crush your skull without leaving a single scuff on it.

It took me ten years of playing until I got my first jazz style bass - a Ken Smith Designs 705 - and I've never looked back!
My only complaint with my current Bass Mods is that she doesn't have a passive tone like a traditional jazz bass or my Sire fretless.

I know this is a jazz bass love fest thread, (and I love jazz basses), but I played a Ric for many years in my 20's, partly because 70's Fenders just felt so clunky by comparison and I wanted something different.
Watching that video makes me want to own a Ric again, even though they are annoying.
I agree 100%. It's a shame, because I used to find real value in his videos. He seems like a good guy, but his videos have gone straight downhill.
The J isnt my favorite but that doesnt mean I dont love them. Most of my favorite players play them. That was a very enjoyable video and inspired me to use my SX Ursa J for practice today.
There are many other teachers with different personalities and approaches at the SBL website. I'm sure anyone could find more than one there that would suit them.

I really love different basses and bass sounds but honestly this whole “versatility” thing is just a worn out internet idea imo. Whether it be a jazz bass or a p bass or god knows what else. It’s the music that matters in the end. Anything is “iconic” in the right hands.
The vid is clickbait, as all SBL hook content is. There’s no wheels being reinvented and there is no arcane “top secret” intel being shared here.
The problem is that clickbait works. Here we are discussing this video, which will drive hundreds to his online platforms, possibly get some online lesson signups, and get Scott and his associates closer to buying one more matching pair of Foderas, or another Porsche or large home. And I’m only helping with that right now. Rats
That “secret trick” is actually a pretty good one if, like me, you didn’t know about it yet. In short, you can get a really mellow tone by setting the tone to zero and soloing the neck pickup, but set its volume a bit below 100%.

I think they're great players, just learned a Marcus Miller and Larry Graham trick from them I will use and love the positive vibes and how much fun they're having (personally like the AC in there as a bonus)

I actually love these videos. I love how they make the bass the forefront for these videos. I know Scott’s bass lessons are a business however, it’s often a great informative lesson on YouTube. Sure. His personality and method aren’t for everyone…. And when he is making these videos it’s for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced all at the same time. I don’t get the hate. There are so many worse things on YouTube. A a lot of garbage things regarding YouTube and bass.
Yeah, I watched that video, too. And, yeah; what ^HE^ said... It's just one of the many reasons why there are 3 - count 'em, 3 - Ricks in my house - and not a single, solitary JB-shaped object. And, one of the many reasons why there never will be, either. Besides the Ricks, I have several other basses that can do the whole "2 single-coil" thing. And, do it better than a Jazz Bass ever did...

I'm kinda surprised that these videos get so much pushback. Sure, the titles and thumbnails are clickbaity, but isn't that to be expected? It's all there to game the algorithm, and clearly the SBL guys are great at that.
I for one tend to enjoy these videos, even if I don't always find them particularly in-depth or informative. Sometimes it's nice to just hear someone talk excitedly about nerdy bass stuff instead of having bandmates roll their eyes and change the subject. Plus, I thought the reggae trick mentioned in this video was really great, and new to me even though I've been playing Jazz basses for a couple years. Maybe I'm simple, but I enjoy a little bass-centric infotainment as background noise now and then. Good on em.

Just an update.
I completed changing the fretless to a fretted shortcale and it sounds huge. It actually stunned me a bit. Pleasant surprise that, it's now my best sounding bass. It never sounded this good as a fretless. I wound up using a stick floating bridge with the strings anchored on the original bridgeplate sans saddles. The only problem I have with it now is it's very heavy which doesn't work all that well with my condition but I have a few ideas on how to partially mitigate that.
