Why would someone do this?

Recently thought about a 5 string P-Bass. I'm not sure what they were thinking here. To me it's a deal breaker and a value killer.

I have no idea what the problem is. It's a P with a fifth string for someone who wants the extended range. This makes perfect sense, other than it's badly overpriced.

In other words, "Nothing to see here...move along."

Don’t see how this is worthy of a thread all of its own. So much worse going in in the bass world.
You're right I apologize, I should've started a thread about how awesome TI jazz flats are, or how mixes have too much lowend these days, or about underrated Lemmy was.

What difference does it make? You can always not respond. I've seen a 100 of these types of threads. Guess you gotta be in the cool kids club to start one.

I'd gladly pay that for an umodded version, but not for this butchering.

Because somebody wanted to have a Precision and Jazz bass in one instrument. Not a big deal to me, Fenders are probably the most modded basses in history. Back in the 70s and early 80s when you could not buy a Fender PJ it was common to add a bridge pickups, not much different except that you couldn’t reverse it by hiding it under a pickguard. Pickup routes in newer Fenders are so huge, you will never leave off the pickguard anyway. So if you don’t like the mod, remove the neck pickup and slap on an new pickguard and the mod is in invisible. Not for that price though.

I’ve seen something similar recently but done better. The pickup closest to the neck will have a slightly deeper sound but to my mind it’s too close to the split pickup. If you went in that direction I believe it would be better to place it closer to the neck for a really full bottom end. The idea is fine, just badly executed.

‘HE WANTED TOO OK!!!!!’

did he really want to? Is that why he sold it months after doing this?

I always cringe when I see heavily modded basses tbh. Just why? Why buy an $1800 if you don’t like it? Why?
This person spends even more money trying to fix it only to sell it for $750 after they realize they just didn’t like it.

someone who probably should spend more time practicing and less time chasing tone.

bros it’s bass guitar. It’s like your air conditioner. As long a it’s working nobody cares or thinks about it.

yeah you can light money on fire and modify an high end bass for a hobby but that’s distinctly different from playing bass!
And I further suggest that no mixing engineer will be using your snowflake tone anyway
