Why would someone do this?

I’ve seen something similar recently but done better. The pickup closest to the neck will have a slightly deeper sound but to my mind it’s too close to the split pickup. If you went in that direction I believe it would be better to place it closer to the neck for a really full bottom end. The idea is fine, just badly executed.
Some people are locked into the idea that pickups must be located precisely at a certain point. I'm guessing that whoever did this mod thought that the J pickups had to be located in exactly the same place they'd be on a jazz bass.

It does say it was modded at Fender so its technically a custom shop without the same badging and fanfare.

If it was modded at Fender, they would have allowed sufficient space for the neck J pickup , and not crammed it right next to the P pickup - there isn't even room for the mounting ears of that pickup - I wonder if the height can even be adjusted. It's not a crime to mod a Fender, but if you don't put any thought into it, you're gonna have issues.

Conclusion: It wasn't modded at Fender. Someone is lying.

Carl Radle played a butchered Tele bass with a P pickup added close to the neck and the single coil moved about 2" toward the bridge. Naturally, it sounded a little like a Ric.

Suppose someone wanted to approximate Ric tones but was too poor to afford one, or preferred Fender ergonomics?

Recently thought about a 5 string P-Bass. I'm not sure what they were thinking here. To me it's a deal breaker and a value killer.

Some people are just dumb. What's worse, is none of his coworkers mentioned anything about the picture.

At guitar center, when you sell your used gear to someone behind the counter, that person is responsible for that peice of equipment. They are responsible for the item, the listing, setting the price, and they also get a percentage of the sale if/when it sells. Whoever buys your used gear at guitar center, is actually buying your used gear.

I'm figuring that nobody likes that guy. Certainly not enough to help him get paid.

Oh, I didn't even notice that this was a JpJ. I would buy that in a heartbeat if I had disposable income right now.

I thought the whole post was about the bass being overcome by the florescent light.
