I find it quite enhances my enjoyment of the site.
I'll admit I did not read through this thread, some of what I have read so far looks toxic and this statement surely I hope is a typo.
Can't speak for the others, but I'm not upset about the joke and do not condone violence: Smith is the one definitely more in the wrong here. I see it's you that now admit the joke was bad, instead of your earlier, silly suggestion that it could be construed as a compliment. There's still hope for you.
I think the words "real man" were a dead giveaway here. Someone thinks everyone has a toxic view, because he does. Some folks get kicked around when they're kids and decide that kicking people around is the way to go because "look how I turned out." Yeah, we see with our own eyes how this turns out with these toxic displays, and it's not what you think.
Even in the force of overwhelming opposition here, he doubles down on the idea that people would think less of Smith if he had not committed a violent act. In some weird universe I guess that's true. Thankful that most of us don't live there.

I don't think he meant it to be insulting. It was worthy of a groan and an eye roll but not much more.
But that's just my take and I'm not asking you to agree. There's still hope for both of us.
I still remember Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, Groucho Marx, Lenny Bruce, Sam Kinison and a host of other comedians who did the same style of comedy that Chris Rock does. They were popular in their day.
Those guys might not go over well now. People are very quick to take offense these days.
It's impressive and almost unreal how well Chris handled the situation. It's also proof that he would have been able to dissipate anything that Will might have tried to verbalize. That's why Will chose to handle it the way he did. Nothing else could have made the same kind of statement and lasting impression.
He wasn't offended by the joke. But Chris was clueless to how easy it is to offend someone even with no intention. Which just gives proof that good intentions mean absolutely nothing.

Sam Kinison was the late late guy who would go on at the Comedy Store while he was under the influence of various substances & get so heavy that people would want to attack him.

I'm quite certain than more than one comedian (as well as bass players) have performed under the influence of various substances numerous times.
I remember Sam Kinison, he could be funny - and very offensive to some. People also didn't like that he was an ex-evangelical child preacher who started telling the truth. But of all those comedians who came out of the Houston comedy scene, Bill Hicks was really the best. Remember, it's just a ride...

I actually agree he may not have wanted it to be insulting; it may have been worthy of a groan to you - honestly, to me it's totally chuckle-worthy, in fact. However, I am not in her shoes and find it patronising to decide what is or isn't insulting to everyone; I don't really think today people are more inclined to feel insulted: they're just less prone to be quiet when they do, which, by some strange twist, often reveals how thin-skinned the uninvolved actually are.
Finally, yeah, no: to suggest that the joke could have been intended or taken as a compliment (because of the comparison therein) is either not well-thought - sorry - or disingenuous. By no means should a comedian be physically attacked for their jokes, but please, let's call it like it is.
I love David Spades genius assessment, that this was a slap in the face to comedy. Yes. Try to get a clue.
