I'll rephrase. Immigrant is suspicious of people who join and a seemingly pimp/sale/contest thread is their only post ever.

Immigrant also thinks requiring one to join Facethesaurus to enter a contest is wumpy.

Very true and remember, NOTHING is ever completely deleted on the internet. There's a snapshot of it somewhere.

So true. If you value privacy. Social media is the worst thing you could participate in.

I enjoy Scott's lessons. He's knowledgeable and comes off as a very likeable guy but anything that requires me to make a Facebook account is not something I'm interested in.

There is no such thing as "killing" a Facebook account. Anything you ever put on it is saved forever. And you pretty much have to "apply" to have your account deleted. And, in the fine print, they reserve the right to DENY your application to delete an account. So, No, I will not be registering either.

By the way, in case you were wondering, Facebook also reserves the right to use, keep, store, and do whatever they wish with ANY picture you EVER posted. They can do this even after you delete a picture because they store them all. So, don't be surprised if you ever see a picture of your girlfriend in a tampon ad even though you never met with the company. You authorized it the minute you put a pic of the girlfriend on your Facebook.

Sorry to derail. Good luck yo those of you registering for the bass. I fully expect to see it in the Basses For Sale section of TB the day after it is picked up. ;)

Scott seems like a great guy and I'm sure the bass itself is amazing.

Ha! That never occurred to me, but you're right: Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to assume.

In any case, whether the OP is him or not, and whether the post/thread is self-promotional or not, I for one have absolutely no objections. The guy has been giving away tons of great lessons for free for years, but he's got to support himself somehow. He accepts donations on his site, and he sells a few products, but I doubt that's enough to pay the rent. Anybody trying to make a living as a musician these days has got to find creative new ways to do it, and I fully support his efforts.

I support him and HIS efforts but just not at the price of MY privacy.

Also his site is doing great, he's hired out a new design for it, he has a new line of products coming out, etc. I think he'd be proud to tell you he's doing well. I wouldn't worry about him living in the street just yet.

I pretty much agree with all the anti-FB sentiments posted here. It has become hard nowadays to avoid the damn thing.vHalf the time i want to comment on anything online now, i have to do it through facebook. Same goes for contests and things like that. Hell, just yesterday i couldnt even vote on the stupid canadian new Lays chips flavor thing cause you have to do it on FB! It's become so pervasive...and invasive.

And what does RACE or SEXUAL preference have to do with your opinion of social sites?

Now, I actually partially agree with the gist of your opinion; I'm not one for social network sites or cliques or posting my personal business on a daily (or hourly!) basis but hey, I'm not going to bash it either, to each his own.

Plus, Talkbass is a sort of "clique", after all, I bet there are no NON-BASSISTS or NON-MUSICIANS posting on here.

So yeah, never heard of Overwater. Link doesn't work.

To people saying they're suspicious of single posting accounts promoting something I don't blame you! I've been following posts on the forums here for years but never contributed... Just thought the competition was pretty neat with no strings attached really... And I really want a new bass!

I'm going to restate this just to be clear since I think some people might be missing/ignoring the point...

There's an obvious consensus here that Scott does a nice job producing his lessons. The repeated complaints are not directed in any way towards Scott, only at facebook. Please don't interpret a collective dislike for facebook as a dislike of Scott or his lessons. I know for me personally, it's just not the case.

I don't however, understand why it's so important to others that we all create an account to enter this contest. If you're trying to win something wouldn't less people entered make your odds better?

Thanks to Scott for setting this contest up for the Facebook friendly crowd but let those who decline do so without the Facebook sales pitch.
