Winter 2017 Build Off -- The Dan-0-Backer

Amazing what gets trashed. Once people know you collect wood, it magically appears.
That is SO true. When word gets out, you'll get the wood. :) I just recently got a garbage bag with some boards left in my office. First I was a little cheesed, but inside was a note - "real honduran mahogany, used to be a table". There were four 18" pieces of solid 2.5"x2.5" and four pieces that were about 46" long. Should make some nice stringers for a neck and some highlights for a body design or something... :D
 
Another possibly unrelated photo, unless of course something about the shape of this bass made me want to build something out of this :rolleyes:... Well, at least it's for the proper clef.

Neat build, I'll try and keep up with all the heresy.

When it comes time to reverse the polarity, could you show us? I'm curious.

Got around to flipping the polarity on two of the coils last night, turned out to be even easier than expected.
Start by removing the nuts from the back and pulling off the mounting plate:

This is the part that was easier than expected; I was expecting to have to use a heat gun to soften the wax potting inside to loosen things up, instead, just a firm straight pull on the end without the wires opened it up, YMMV:

Looking out the underside, notice that the magnet is marked white on the underside. To reverse the polarity, this needs to be on top.

Fed a bit of the wire up into the tube and pulled the coil-magnet assembly out just enough to clear the screw head to and allow it to rotate 180 degrees, and pushed the assembly back into place. I also could have pulled it all the way out and slipped the magnet out and reversed it that way. Now its just a simple matter of pushing the other half of the tube back on.

Now to make a pair of brass mounting plates to hold the tubes together as an assembly with a single screw per side for height adjustment.

Yes but, since the the coil is isolated from the ground, swapping the usage of the red and white wires compensates for it. Here, I confess I'll have to think about (and maybe just fiddle with ;)) how to hook the coils together for phase. Once I have one assembled on a plate, I'll try it out holding over the strings of an existing bass and work out the phasing.

All this electronics stuff is still Greek to me, probably always will be. I am getting the woodwork down, but still purely monkey see/do from clear diagrams when it comes to wiring. Props to the circuit-heads out there. Is the goal to produce humbuckers using two single coils?

Flipping a magnet won't buck hum, because it's the coils that pick up EMI. Also, and I could be wrong about this, but I thought that there was some kind of weird strength imbalance between N and S. The way I read it, you always want N up, and opposite coil winds to get hum bucking.

If you flipped the whole assembly I assume it'll work, but someone else will have to speak up on the finer points of magnetism and how opposite magnetic fields might change the sound.
 
Apologies, I was clearly drawing on incomplete information, possibly for an unrelated use, clouded by time. Thanks for the cool (and very helpful) diagrams!

I realize now that I have access to a physics genius and he can answer my question about pole strength, but it appears that it isn't relevant to pickup design anyway. :)
I'm not a physics genius by any means. Just remembering tidbits from my college physics.
 
I've installed these on my SuperB 5'r and really like them. Very comfortable resting my right palm on, string-thru, and solid. I have sets in all finish options (black, gold, silver) and have used the silver and black so far. :thumbsup:
Yeah, I like them a lot. I do want to make a couple of drilling/routing templates to simplify installation in future builds.
