WOW - congrats on the new gig - I never doubted it for a minute. You doing backups or they gonna let you sing lead on some of the songs too? And the bass looks freakin awesome, as always. I love that top!
Kudos, you are off - running and funning!
Looks like we may be doing a few Eagles songs, Tequila Sunrise, Peaceful Easy Feeling, and Take it Easy. I'll sing lead on those to give the singer a break. I'll sing backup on many of the others.
That's the goal in life. Create your own Heaven here on earth, where you can spend the last portion of your years. It makes it all worthwhile.
Congrats on the gig! I'm sure you'll find time to build basses and refine your craft.

I have had a slight itch to get back out myself.
Not so much on bass... but rather my other love: hand percussion. I really want to build a pair of congas to add to the two I already have.

You know, had I known you were looking to play hand percussion, I might have reached out. As I get older, I'm beginning to think my dream band is 2 acoustic guitarists, me on bass, and a hand percussionist. It seems so many kit drummers play so loud. Though I must say, this band I just joined, the drummer plays at a very reasonable volume.
Anyway, I applied the first coat of epoxy sealer on the bass, after sanding to 220 grit.
I'll let that cure overnight, sand smooth, and likely apply a second coat. I'm not sure if I'm going to spray on clear, or just go with a satan epoxy finish. It depends on the timing.
Le Groan. If you are going to make that pun, then I guess it's a given for a devil bass.

Ooooo it's so pretty! Everything just works so well together, the pattern in the top and the stripes and the fretboard....

Yeah, ...the evolution of musical tastes with age as well as influence from surroundings, is a fascinating thing....
I was a bassist in a thrash metal band in the 80s
But in 2000 I was playing congas in a hippie band in Flagstaff.... stuff like Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, & the Dead.... It was really fun!
As far as listening goes now ... I am all over board.
I even like some classical... never saw that coming
Just finished sanding and laying on a second coat of epoxy. No pics, it looks the same as yesterday at this time.
Speaking of devil basses, I pulled out this one:
(Actually, looking at the picture now, I had forgotten that there's red LEDs in there) and played to the current songs I'm working on for this new band. I hadn't really played it since I built it, because the string spacing is so tight. After playing the 5 string Rickenbacker for the past two weeks, I've become used to really tight string spacing, so this devil bass is a lot easier to play. Tuning it up, however, revealed a major issue. Let me say that I really dislike those Kahler fixed bridges. As I tuned up the string, the bridge piece would slide forward, and this happened on like 4 of the 5 strings. I can't have that. So what I'm thinking of doing, is setting the intonation, and drilling a hole right where the slot in bridge piece ends, threading the hole, and putting in a machine screw to hold the bridge piece in place. Those 2 little allen screws just aren't doing the job.
On top of that, the sound is *really* bright. Single coil pickups will do that. I have a preamp pedal on order, so we'll see if that can't tame it down a bit.
On this bass, I put the upper strap button on the back of the upper horn. So when I'm sitting down while playing it, that button digs right into my chest. Not good. I'm glad I went to putting the strap button on the tip of the horn on later versions.
Also, the fret work on this bass is not my best, though admittedly, I have the action pretty low. The neck actually had a back bow when I pulled it out of the case, so I had to tweak the truss rod, and adjust the action at the bridge. Have I mentioned how much I dislike these Kahler fixed bridges?

When I put a straplock on the back side of a horn, I use the ones that can be embedded in, nothing protruding to poke into you.

Interesting. I have one Kahler bridge like that but no issues with the individual string bridges moving so far. It is a pain to intonate but not really worse than any other bridge where you have to loosen the saddles and move them without a screw adjustment. My semi-ocd issue with it is that I always feel like the string spacing is off and I want to adjust it. I can ignore it, though. Well, mostly...
