Winter Build Off 2022 - Get Ready

I may resort to building a whole bass with a hatchet and sandpaper.

We had unusually high temps today, which brought about unusually high winds, which brought about loss of power.
If it's not resolved in 10 days, I may resort to building a whole bass with a hatchet and sandpaper. I have a battery bank and inverter in the van, I may be able to keep some batteries charged and do some work with cordless tools. Another option is to load the van up with all my tools, transport them to work and simply live in the van, in the parking lot at work for the duration of the build off.
It's still up in the air at the moment.
Thankfully I still have cell service, so I can post this.

In all seriousness, hope everyone is OK. Those storms were no joke

All good here. WNY/Buffalo weather is a lot more dynamic than most people know about. Most people just think snow. But we actually get a lot more wind than Chicago. Also more sun annually than quite a few cities. Short but hot summers, etc etc. Basically, nothing super extreme like tornadoes, earthquakes, sharknadoes, etc, but we get a good dose of pretty much every weather condition. So, a windy day isn't much to worry about. I can't complain when I know people are dealing with having their homes ripped apart by much worse.
And,....actually,.....my work is less than a mile from the river.

We got the storm about 2 hours after you. Most amazing part here was the temperature drop. It went from about 60 to about 30 in about 45 minutes.

Every time we get a good wind storm like that, I find myself thinking: maybe somewhere out there, there's a giant old half rotten maple getting knocked down right now, and it will make it's way into my slab guy's hands, and two or three years from today I'll be making it into a bass or a coffee table...

I've been sitting here for the last sixty or so pages thinking I've got everything ready, can't wait to start building.... then yesterday I realized that I have no glue, none, zip, nil, nada
Guess I'll be going to the hardware store sometime in the next ten days after all.

I thought it might be of interest to post the numbers of people participating this year. I've been tracking potential participants and have divided into three groups when it comes to joining the build off. Yes, Maybe and Possibly. These are my subjective assessments based on posts and activity here and around TB.

Yes: 20
Maybe: 20
Possibly: 11

Even if none of the Maybes and Possiblys join and we lose around a third of the Yes', we should still have a build off with around a dozen or more participants, so it's looking good!

Are you counting people twice if they're planning on building two basses? Or three times if they're doing three? I think I'm two yesses and a maybe. We'll see how busy the winter is.

I'm building one bass. One bass to rule them all.
Maybe.
Naturally, instead of playing it safe and simple to get one under my belt and build confidence, every part of this build will be something I've never done before, on top of being a first scratch build of an instrument. Sure, why not? Make it stressful on top of doing it for a BO with a time limit.

Actually I'm at least one Probably.

I have what I think are some nifty ideas, but every winter I tell myself that I need to work on that Volkswagen, and it hasn't happened yet! Perhaps I can find time for both? I would have to sacrifice my evening sloth time….

Then you stick it on a shelf and wait for a future buildoff with a theme of "rebirth?"

I need to work on that Volkswagen

Maybe the VW should be rebirthed as a bass?

I would have to sacrifice my evening sloth time….

I would shift sloth time to the daytime work hours, that way evenings are freed up for production.
It's all about scheduling and time management.
