I have my VMTD on almost all of the time as I prefer the "less edgy" tone I can get with it. Using the VMTD and the Super Symmetry to shape my sound works best for me. I'm *probably* doing something wrong and am sure I will offend someone but my signal chain is Super Symmetry - VMTD - H9 - Factotum.

Hey guys! Im trying to slowly piece together a small board for worship at my Church. Currently its Bass>Tuner>Digitech BSW (for octave effect)>Blower Box>Tone Hammer (belongs to the Church)>Board. The Tone hammer sounds pretty good for going direct to the board but it also just sounds generic. Nothing too amazing about it. I love sounds with character and am looking into purchasing my own preamp/di. The two in my price range I keep coming back to are the Rusty Box and the Olympic MKIII. Both are pretty different and have odd power requirements, but I love the sounds Im hearing. Any thoughts or opinions? Any first hand experience?

Man, I got an Ampeg SCR-DI and it rocks hard and takes names. I dig the Ampeg sound but I am a dad keep in mind. The Ampeg SCR- DI can be dialed in to an SVT sound although not perfect it comes pretty darn close! It took my tone from good to great in about five minutes after the sound man did some adjustments. Now, people comment frequently and voluntarily tell me how good the bass sounds. :hyper:
The guitar player loves it, he said my bass sounded "sick." In a good way.

I vote for Ampeg. :cool:

I got an Olympic MkIII about a month ago and I love it! Haven't used it through the FOH house yet (I normally play piano at church and only get to bass occasionally) but it sounds great through my GK rig. It's a great sounding preamp that can be clean or give you a nice tubey drive. Flexible tone shaping options and the inbuilt cab IR sims means it will be great for DI use as well as sounding great through its headphone amp. The included power supply works well, but I installed a Cioks DC5 on my board yesterday to power everything so I didn't have to use the included supply and a One Spot for the rest of the board. It's a well designed, engineered and manufactured preamp, similar in quality to the Darkglass pedals (which I also use). The Shift Line guys were very easy to deal with and they ate offering 10% off for Talkbass peeps with the code: TALKBASS2018

I'm very happy with it!

I agree that the ToneHammer, while quality, is a bit generic sounding. I liked it when I demo'd it, but not enough to buy it. I don't have familiarity with the two DI/Pre boxes you mention, however if you're in a worship environment where a Blower Box can be used, then I'd say it's likely that just about any DI/Pre would be acceptable. As @Rumble Thunder said, the Ampeg SCR-DI is a solid choice. It's not an SVT in a box, but it is REALLY close. I've heard good things about the Eden DI/Pre, but I don't have experience with it. I had been shopping around for some time before settling on the Darkglass Alpha Omega Ultra. I really can't say enough great things about it. It's been great. My worship rig is pretty simple at this point, TU-3 > Duncan Studio Bass Comp > Alpha Omega Ultra > FOH. At this point you could likely score an early generation Darkglass piece for a decent price.

Haha I don't use the blower box all out or anything. Gain is left around 9-10 with treble at 10 and bass at 12 with volume set pretty much at unity. Its worked well for builds and big parts. sounds fun and a little synthy when partnered with the octave

Well, I've recently discovered that my OCSD>Jule Monique tube preamp...is a beautiful thing (and better than the OCSD on its own...)

Not just talking about tone, but also the quality of the DI signal. Jule has a top-quality transformer DI with a variable output dial...even dimed, it's clear/no hint of hiss and allows our FOH board to use pretty low gain. A noticeable bass channel improvement in the IEMs...

Think of the OCSD as tightening up the gorgeous soft butter tube sound to taste...for IEM/FOH. Pretty sure this goes for the Noble (or Reddi), too...
