Beautiful top on that Nordy Jeff...

I play at church and also do some stuff with a cross-church ministry by the name of Soul Survivor...I lean towards quite a bit of the Brit stuff (Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Martin Layzell, Vicky Beeching etc) plus some Passion stuff (David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Charlie Hall).

The Jazz tends to get the workout for this kind of thing...

I'll second basspraiser about spending an hour or two over your preferred beverage with the guy...clear communication and relationship might not be the answer, but it usually doesn't hurt ;)

Hello all....

I'm a believer and play at my church as well as several others.

I grew up in the church and played as a young man on the worship team at Pittsburgh East Christian Church (formerly Pittsburgh East Full Gospel Church). My mom had a worship band called "Zion's Wind" that went to prisons and nursing homes when I was young. (I played harmonica then.)

Years later, here I am in Charlotte, NC. I'm one of the active bassists with MorningStar Fellowship Church which is now located at the former Heritage USA/PTL where Jim and Tammy Baker brought shame to the Christian community. Our church took occupancy of the building a few years ago and is restoring the name of Jesus by our presence there. There is no affiliation to the Bakers other than a friendship from our pastor and Mr. Baker. Rick Joyner wants to show how God can bring restoration into a life like Jim Baker's. I understand Jim Baker has some new ministry out in Tennessee.

Anyway, MorningStar hosts several conferences a year, and usually they call in the big-wigs for the worship. Leonard Jones (who I play alot with) has been friends with Gary Lunn for years, so he uses Gary quite often on the conferences. There's also been a few times where they used Adam Nitti, whom I got to know through MS.

At MS we play all original worship music. There is usually someone like Leonard leading, along with a student from our school of ministry. I play on Sundays and some Friday nights on a rotating schedule. Leo usually asks me to play when he's playing. I love playing with him, he's phenomenal. Luke Skaggs, Ricky's son, has been playing alot with us recently. He's great too. I've tried uploading videos into YouTube, but don't know how to change file size, so I can only get certain clips to upload. Here are a few with me playing:


My favorite songs are probably "Jacob" and "Smashing Idols" (we don't play the latter very often anymore). The sound is very much high-energy rock. Imagine that for a church service!

I also get hired for some big churches in the area for special events. The most memorable would be Hickory Grove Baptist Church (Main Campus) for their Christmas concert last year. It's incredible there--full orchestra with horns and strings, full choir, about 12 lead singers at the front, and a full rhythm section. That was a great performance. That church gets so many people I can't even count them all...they do four services every Sunday! Other churches I've played for locally include Charlotte North Fellowship and Christ Central Church.

I'm going to give a bigger update in the near future....but God bless!:)

That is crazy that you play there. I have a friend that went to the morning star school of ministry and she loved it. Then went on to serve as a missionary in Mexico (where I met her on a missions trip). Sounds like you have a lot of fun there.

Count me in...I first started playing bass three years ago after being recruited by the Dir of Worship at Peace Lutheran in Eau Claire, WI. I currently play twice a month in our new sanctuary.

I mainly use a Geddy Lee Jazz with a Sansamp direct into the sound system with in-ear monitors.

My favorite song is My Redeemer Lives by Hillsongs.

We usually do some requests from the hymnal between more contemporary sets on Sunday mornings... someone requested Power in the Blood this morning... The pastor was on keyboard this morning (no guitar) and his wife was on acoustic piano... Well, one thing led to another, and by the time we were done, it had gone all bluegrass on us... what a lot of fun, too! Good service this morning... Hope your was too...

Yeah, it's great. God has blessed me since I've lived here. Now it's time for bed--I have to get up and teach my K-12 graders with LD and ADHD how to play music tomorrow... (day job)

I love when stuff like that happens,, we usually end up in a god ol southern gospel vibe when we hit the hymnal.

i think this thread is growing flipping amazing - God breathed i feel, its great to hear people really being honest about church, my pastor was saying yesterday

"Church aint perfect and it is a taste of heaven, i look at Church like Noahs Ark - "

The stench inside may be rough and at times hard to bear but its better than the chaos going on outside!"

Guys and girls i just wanna say just keep on posting like this and lets show everyone that Church aint perfect, but its sure 100% better than the mess outside the church!

I thank God everyday that Church is real - i would hate to go to a Church that pretends nothing wrong ever happens it would be like

I had an emotional Sunday as it was my last ever sunday at my Church (was saved there 3 years ago!) im moving on friday so please pray for a chilled moving day and that all my Basses and gear arrive safely in our new home!

Once again, thanks for the responses and encouragements. This Sunday I just made up my mind to be happy with playing the roots and locking in with the drummer. Our set list this Sunday was: You Are Good, Made Me Glad, Lift Up The Name, His Name Is Wonderful (old Hymn), and You Are Near. I guess my biggest problem is I want so much to have the freedom of expression with the bass and that conflicts with what the music director wants from the bass. Since he is the director I must follow his wishes and be satisfied with that. Issue over.
I did not mention in any previous posts that I play at Victory Christian Center. It is a family church that is Pentecostal-charismatic in nature. We play three services on Sunday morning, 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00am. Being charismatic, those in the worship service tend to get rather antimated with the music. Hands raised (very prominent), hopping or slightly dancing ( fairly common) swaying with the music (very common), falling down or fainting also known as being "slain in the spirit" ( very rare but does happen) and speaking in tongues (very common). I think that when looking out on the congregation and seeing all those people worshiping in such a joyous manner I just want to lay down a groove that is fitting for the occasion. That may be part of the reason I want to play more than just roots. There are many songs in which roots only are appropriate and I acknowledge that. But some of the more upbeat contemporary songs really beg for a great bass line. Anyway, as I said before, the matter is settled.
You may all be aware of who Tammy Faye Messner is. See was the former Tammay Faye Bakker, married to Jim Bakker who I think started The PTL broadcast program and who later fell from grace. She just passed away a few days ago. She was the music director at Victory Christian Center for about 21 years. This was long before I attended there so I never met her. The church is holding a Memorial service for her tonight and will have local news coverage.
One last comment. I mentioned I did not like the change made in what we have to wear on the platform. We used to be neat but casual. Now we have to be in coat and tie. It was just announced that our church is planning on being televised in the local area each Sunday. This is supposed to begin within a year. Maybe that is the reason the director wants us to look more formal.
